Afro/Curly undercut...intrigued yet?

Hey hey,
I had no idea there was a board out there dedicated to guys trying to grow long hair...Guess I've been one for a while now but here's the rub:
I really would just love to have hair that was shoulder length but because of my mixed-background I have really, REALLY curly hair. It's almost afro at the sides. Picturing that, yes? Well anyhow, I've been growing it out for 6 months now, but I grew it for a year and half before last September and besides achieving one huge 'fro nothing else happened. So...this time, I want to go for the whole tieback-undercut hairstyle which I've seen on a few rock stars. So a question or two.
Considering my hair is about 3-4 Inches long at the moment how much longer will it take to tie back?
Is there anything I can do to straighten out my hair so I can try and comb it downwards?
Is this hairstyle pretty easy to maintain? It looks cool but is the constant head shaving a problem?
Cheers.

Ive seen some great looking curly hair on people. When it gets long and all one length it starts taking great shape. Id say you need to grow about a year and a half to get a nice ponytail, with the odd small amount taken off to even things up. Good Luck!

Do not get an undercut. Once you've got one there's no turning back, man. Use some good haircare products to tame your hair a bit and just let it grow out. Straightening will potentially destroy your hair so be careful with that. Ever seen those old ladies with very thin, messed up hair? That's the wonderful result of chemical treatments. Rock stars, hmmm? Think Slash http://www.snakepit.org/ ! I have a hunch his hairtype is similar to yours (he's also multiracial).

I am dubious of this... Most old women tend to have their short and curly, which may or may not be what you're reffering to. However, the reason why their hair is thin, and poor looking, has nothing to do with their treatment of it. If it was a case of damaging their hair with chemicals, then they could just cut it off and start again(most old women tend to have their hair so short, this wouldn't be much of a task), and their hair would be fine, wouldn't it?
Old women have very uncontrolable hair, with very thin individual hairs, due to their age. Chemicals effect the hairs themselves, and not the roots, so using chemicals will not doom you to eternally have awful hair. It might damage your hair, but any new hair that grows will be just fine..

They perm and colour their hair over and over, even though it's totally messed up. They'd never consider cutting it off. The Shaft look might look cool on some guys but not on women!

You're right about the roots, but how the hell would you expect the hair to repair itself (by growing out) if it's chemically treated all the time? Every new growth gets subjected to this treatment so there's no way these women will get a head full of healthy hair. Those old birds are STUBBORN (and yet some of them have the nerve to tell me to get a haircut)!!!

I don't understand this... Once you have an undercut, you can always grow the rest out, you can even wear your hair down while its growing to conceal it. I don't know why people who decide to get an undercut and change their mind, totally chop it off and start from scratch or more. It isn't a dead end, just grow the rest, more than half of the work has already been accomplished.

But have you ever seen a bloke with his undercut going through the awkward stage again? HIDEOUS! And if this ghastly look isn't bad enough, when they tie it back, the part that should be shaved doesn't behave, so they basically can't tie it back without gelling it. It's just easier to avoid the feared undercut.
Cheers.

Just how "fuzzy?"

Is it "frizzy-fuzzy" or just tight curls? There's a difference.
Have you tried PROFESSIONAL relaxing?
No matter how frizzy/untameable your hair is, there is a remedy. Some can be damaging, but...if you go to a salon who specializes in your hair type, they'll know what to do with minimal damage. It depends on how much you feel having your hair look good and be healthy is worth.
