curly hair hell!

hi everybody, my friend told me about this site many times, so I decided I should come pay a visit. I have some of the worst curly hair imaginable. Right now, my hair's been growing for 5 months, I think, and I hate it so much!! The curiousity of seeing what it will look like long is all that drives me not to cut it. If anyone could give me some tips on how to manage it, conditioners, shampoos, whatever other stuff I could use(I'd rather not use gel, but if it's the best thing that'll work, so be it) I'd also like to see any progression pictures you might have. Anything to help or to inspire me to keep growing would be great! Thanks for any help given!

Here's a pic of my pal Pete (the one with the curly hair). This pic was taken in 1979 when we were both 23. Hope this is enough encourragement for you.

My hair is really curly too, but it's long enough that I can tie it back a little bit, and when it dries tied back it straightens it. And I only wash my hair every few days so it isn't a hassle taking a shower.
Uhh..

If I was Zack I would not want Pete's hair!
I would want my friend Mark's hair. His hair is curly, but it's so long you can't tell. It's in tight spirals. I used to think my hair would be this way but I guess it's just straight with a slight curve. So just stick with it. Curly hair takes twice as long to look good but it definitely worth it in the end.
Cheers.

If I had curly hair I would just get dreadlocks once it reached my shoulders.

Most people here are using Aussie Moist shampoo and conditioner. You can also use the Aussie leave in conditioner afterward. Leave in conditioners really helps to smooth the hair and detangle before combing.
I use a wide tooth comb (carefully) while my hair is wet, and try not to comb it once it has dried.
Depending on how curly your hair is, the weight should pull the curls as it gets longer.
I first let my back get long and cut the sides and front. Then I let the sides grow. Then I stopped cutting the front (bangs). So, my front hangs in "ringlets," my sides are at shoulder length and not as curly, and my back is just wavy.
An option you have is a blow dryer on the cool setting and a large round brush. This straightens curly hair somewhat.

Hi. i couldn't help but reply because i'm in the process of doing the same thing, and i have super spiral curly hair that is unmanageable sometimes. The best solution i have come up with to tame it is to when you first come out of the shower, either put in mouse, gel, or I like- Paul Mitchel's hair sculpting lotion. I put A LOT. The trick is to do this when you first get out of the shower. After you run it evenly through your hair, wet your hair again with your fingers from the water in the sink. your hair will be sopping wet, and your curls will look thiner, cause more hair is in each of the ringlets. This is always a plus for me b/c my hair is so crazy. Now that it's sopping wet, take a towel and crunch the ends with it so your hair isn't dripping ridiculously. DON'T TOWEL DRY IT... this will only give you friz. how it looks wet is what it's going to look like when it's dry. When you dry it (preferable air dry) and you need to do it fast- diffuse it! When it's dry, it'll most probably look still wet. This is not a problem b/c you will then shake out your head like a wet dog, and watch your hair turn into a beautiful, non-frizzy perfect curled mane. I sometimes peel individual curls with my nail to take out the wet look if shaking it out doesn't do it completely. I truly hopes this works for you! If you have spiral curly hair, it should! let me know if it does help... sorry i don't have a pic!

Hey, i also have spiral curls, that i just learned how to manage. Sorry to say, but it takes alot of work to get those soft shiny curls everyone wants. This is what I do. I wash with Frizz Ease shampoo and condition with Frizz ease conditioner. I leave the conditioner in for 3 min, comb and rinse. I then use a leave in conditioner, a little bit of mouse, put it up in a bun, add a little hair spray and go to bed> The next morning ur hair will be dry and frizz free. Take it out of the bun and get ready for ur day!

i have extremely curly hair. it comes from my mixed (black and white) heritage. until eighth grade i had the same problem you did. my hair was long back then and whenever i would try to wear it down i would end up beating it back to try to see. i ended up cutting it short, about shoulder length. now whenever i only shampoo once a week and drench my hair with leave-in conditioner the rest of the week. the conditioner acts likes gel but does as much good as gel does damage. i doesn't really matter which kind of conditioner i use. (most of the time i use some sort of black hair product variation. like dark and lovely.) it usually results in the same effect. i only brush it when it's fresh out of the shower and with a wide tooth comb. (like that other girl said.) hope this helps. it took me at least thirteen years of beating my hair into submission to finally unlock its sercets.
