It's better to work with what you have than to try and get what someone else has.
You could braid (plait) it. That would give waviness when let down after it's been braided overnight.

I agree with Clarko about rollers. Small one make your hair curly, larger ones wavy, and very large ones actually make it smooth and straight. You could also use a curling iron, but it's easy to damage your hair from them with the heat. A perm could be even more damaging, and the new hair that grows out would be straight.
If your hair is long enough to braid, you could try "setting" your hair in a braid. Braid the hair when it's still a little damp after shampooing then let it completely dry. When you unbraid it you should have some waves. I have a friend who does that and it looks cool.

if u have long hair u can put it in a french braid and that makes it wavy...also just braid it at the bottom and it looks pretty cool! ps..it really works!

Ambitions such as these are way too much work for me. I'm lazy I guess. I just accept what the Good Lord has given me and go from there. But then again, I am very pleased with the thick full hair that the Good Lord has given me, so no complaints here. Accept maybe that I wish it were already halfway down my back, but I can survive the wait I guess. Two more years maybe? Sorry I haven't been of any help. Peace!

You can have waves if willing to work at it. Fisrt you need the right hairdresser. This not likely some hair butcher in the mall with 1 yr experience. Find an older experienced person. Suggestion: if you know anyone involved in a theater group who does their hair for stage productions? Also a good school for hair stylists may be an option at a reasonable price. Be sure and take a photo of what you want.
You must realize that this is not a one time thing and be willing to learn to set your own hair unless you can afford your own personal hairdresser.
Good Luck!!
We would of course like to see some pics of your results!!
