Preserving curls

hey guys. i have really thick curly hair, it's fairly long, about 8-9 inches. its soooo curly, it's really cool, i've began to appreciate it. the problem is i'm starting to notice that as my hair gets longer, obviously, it gets straighter. i know i can't do anything about that, it's natural.
when i wash my hair, its nice and curly, however, i destroy most of the curls when doing my hair, i usually run my fingers through it, i don't brush or comb. i let it dry a little bit before i touch it...
now do you guys have any tips (ANY LITTLE THING HELPS) to preserve my curls. for example, should i wrap it in a towel and wait til its completely dry, etc. etc. i want to avoid putting anything in it, i don't like to use gel or anything, i leave it all natural.
thanks.

When hair is wet/damp is the time to arrange it/comb it into place so when dry it is "set" in the way one wants to wear it. Because you are running your fingers through the curls while they are still somewhat damp, you are inadvertantly straightening them a bit. Let the curls alone until they are totally dry. Then you can loosen your hair to the degree you want without sacrificing curl.

Hi Bruce,
I probably have similar hair to the original poster, and your advice, of course, is spot on. The issue, however, is that my hair takes over two hours to air dry. Are there any methods you can recommend to speed up drying without killing the curls? If I leave the house before it's nearly dry on a windy day, I end up with a Don King poof!

Dan, you might try distributing a light film of light gel on your palms and PATTING your hair while it is wet and in the curl formation you wish to maintain.

Thanks, I'll give it a try!

Erm, I'm not sure what to suggest. I just thought to mention Slash (Former guitaurist of Guns N Roses), not only because he seems to be a serious exception to the fact you stated, but also because I just happened to be listening to classic GN'R at the time I read your post.
