Conditioner instead of gel?

Hi all,
I've been growing my hair out for 10 months now. I have fairy thick and wavy hair, so it's been in that "poofy" stage for quite a while now. The first few months of my awkward stage were easily managed with the use of a hat, but after a while I decided to let it flow. In order to keep the fluffyness down, I've been using regular hair conditioner (whatever I find in the house) instead of gel or mousse. I've been getting really good results this way, since it starts out slicked early in the day, then by the days end is usually soft to the touch and well in order. Just curious if this is ok for my hair. I don't use "leave in" conditioners (is there a difference?), just regular cream rinse type stuff. Suave Naturals (vanilla floral) seems to be the best I've used, and also is one of the cheapest. So is it cool to continue, or have I comitted an unholy crime against hairmanity?

Keep doing what you're doing with the hair conditioner...Though I recommend using something better than bargain basement if/when your wallet permits(I use Aveda Rosemary-Mint; a cream rinse one). Leave-in conditioners differ from the cream rinse stuff in that you don't rinse out the leave-in conditioner. So not to worry, the hair police won't be arresting you anytime soon for commiting a "hair-don't."

That's the thing, I havent been rinsing it out. I leave in regular cream rinse, instead of using gel. It stays in my hair all day, that's what I meant when I said it starts out slicked early on in the day, but as air hits it it gets dry and more soft. So is using a regular conditioner te same way you would use a "leave in" conditioner ok?

My dear friends,
it is not a question or either or. When I shampoo my hair about twice a week---though I rince it almost every day and add a little conditioner but no detergent-- I use a conditioner so that there are no tangles when I get out of the douche. However, I have a good word for GELS. My hair is naturally wavy, and if I leave it be blooms into a behive of chaos. So I use a tablespoon of good quality gell, and brush my hair as smoothe in the back as I can get it. When it dries, it relaxes, lies down, and falls into soft waves. However, if your hair is straight and you have a good haircut, the gell should also leave you light, moving with an even trim on the ends.
