What is layered hair?

Heard that it's good to have layered hair while one's still in process of growing long his hair. But what is layered hair? Do I just tell the hairstylist to cut layered hairstyle and she'll know what to do?
Btw, my hair is currently medium and growing, but very messy :(

I think he/she will know it. Layered hair means that itīll look "bigger" because your hair wonīt have all the same length but certain layers and because of this many layers over one your hair will look like it was thicker than it actually is. Hope this helps you.

It is just that - cut with layers of differing length. During the seventies, the feather cut was a popular variation. The problem is that all you do is put off the day when you have to grow out the layers during which is will still look messy. Either you want layered hair and keep having it cut or you want long hair in which case, stop cutting and live with the growing out period.
Having grown out layered hair (child of the seventies) I wouldn't do it again.

I agree with everything Mark has said. I certainly wouldn't want to repeat my experience of growing out layered hair.
I have fine (as opposed to coarse) hair, and I always found layered hair to be a pain to manage. Unless you enjoy having to comb it every five minutes...?
When I look back at pictures of myself taken in the 70s, it is true that my hair really looks great in some pictures. In some others I seem to be having a really bad hair day.
If you grow the layers out the end result is (eventually) much easier to manage. Also, you will be able to grow non-layered hair much faster, as you won't need it cut just to maintain the shape.
One final thing. Layered hair looks dated. The fashion for long hair now is to grow it out with no layers. Whilst growing long hair takes about three years, which is longer than the usual fashion cycles, there are still long term trends.
Usually, if someone says your hair is not fashionable because it's long, they are, frankly, trying to annoy you. However, layers scream 70s, and I suppose a mullet would say you were stuck in the 80s (never had one of those, I'm pleased to say!). I don't think that hair that's long all over is something that can really go out of style.

Thanks for the replies.
It will look thicker? My friend told me it would keep my already thick and rather messy hair in place, seems not a good idea then.

Only if you maintain the layers through regular cuts.
It will look messier! nt

...if messier is an actual word...
