College Dorms and hair sabotage???
Posted by pvevan on June 04, 2003 at 22:13:41: Previous Next
Hi,
I'm headed off to college in the fall, and I'm very excited about the whole thing. Anyway, one of my concerns is that living in the dorms, I'll have some jackasses try to cut or otherwise sabotage my hair. I've lived in large groups with my basketball team before, and I would get threats of late night trims. However, we were all friends, they knew how important my hair was to me, and they respected that. Unfortunately, that can't be said in the dorms. So my questions are:
1) Has anybody ever had a problem with people trying to cut your hair while asleep or in the dorms at college?
2) Besides from the obvious, lock your door, don't get wasted out of your mind, and wearing a beanie to bed, are their any tips on keeping my hair safe. I plan on warning my roomies that a haircut will result in a criminal charge, but you never know.
Any advice/experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Evan
PS- does anybody else have a problem with their post not showing up until a few hours, or is it just me. Watch, now that I've asked it'll work perfectly.

Evan,
One would think that long hair on campus would be a sign of intelligence to be envied, not attacked.
Were you so attacked the charge would be assault, probably at a felony level, in most states.
In my wild years on campus in the early years, when hazing was rampant, I don't ever remember an individual being assaulted, having his hair cut or altered. Now his clothing, his toothpaste, and all property were fair game.
You might check a hardware store for simple traveler's alarms that sound when your dorm room door is opened. You can also buy simple home annunciators (basically a battery, sonalert, and magnetic contact) that would work like an annunciator on a retail store door.
If you own firearms and they are allowed in the dorm you could spend lots of time conspicuously cleaning them....
Be sure to go to lots of dances. The college ladies LOVE long hair. You'll catch them running their fingers through it while you slow dance. Ladies in class will ask to braid your hair during boring lectures. Let them.
I was thinking the same thing!

That is assault. Plain and simple. Let people know, if they become a bit too "riled up" with the thought of scissors, that you WILL press charges.
It shouldn't actually come to that, but you never know.

You're worried for nothing. College is probably the safest place to be with long hair.

That makes me feel better, thanks.
Anyway, I feel pretty safe as long as my roommate is cool, but a little precaution never hurts. I'll just make sure to lock my door.
Cheers

When I was at college in the late 1970s, we played a lot of silly practical jokes were played on each other.
I made a skeleton key from my own room key which would get into any room in bth blocks (with two different types of lock!), so pranks were easy.
The student in the next room to me had long straight blond hair (he was a dead ringer for Joni Mitchell!), and was such a heavy sleeper that the cleaner used to come in, pull him onto the floor wrapped in his bedclothes, make the bed, vacuum his room, and leave, and he didn't wake up, but nobody ever gave him a trim.
Good luck, enjoy college, and keep on growing!

The worst practical joke I had to suffer was when someone tied a stag beetle by its leg with one of my own hairs while I was sleeping. A few days later the prankster found a hornet nest (complete with occupants) in his bag...

The worst one we played on this longhaired guy next door was when he rearranged his room becaue his new girlfriend didn't like it.
He went over to collect her from her place, and while he was out, we used my masterkey to go in and change it back the way it was before.
But we helped them put it right afterwards.
I like the hornet's nest!

You are worrying too much. There will be lots of guys with long hair in college. I think that coming out with a 'pre-emptive warning' would be a mistake. Just be cool with the people you hang with, and nobody will bother you about anything. College tends to be much more tolerant and liberal than high school. Remember, college is the time when you have the most to gain, and the least to lose, by being yourself.
Totally true

Giving a "warning" isn't a bad idea... its a terrible thing to do. I'm sure that nobody will bother you or your hair, college is very different from highschool, there's people from every corner of the country and many other countries as well. People are more tolerant and open. A lot of people have or had long hair, and they are used to it. To give a warning, would be putting the idea in their heads and making yourself look anti social if you're lucky. Just chill, don't mess with anyone and I'm sure it will be ok.

unless you are going to a conservative school I wouldnt really worry about it... of course theres always a chance still but yeah... I live in a campus apartment so we each have our own rooms, and on top of that my roommmates (although kinda conservative and one is in the military) dont really care what I do so....
as for dorms.... almost all dorms you have to share a room with at least 1 person :p
