Long hair and subcultures

One of the reasons I see people growing their hair long is to fit a subculture or image. For example, some people have long hair to fit the "tr00, gr1m, n3cro" type of dealie, and some people have long hair to fit the "hippie" image, etc. Personally, I just have long hair because I think it looks good.
So I was just wondering how many of you have/are growing long hair as a kind of subculture/image/nonconformist type of thing, instead of completely for aesthetics.

I have grown my hair becauseof my religion (islam) encourages us to keep shoulder length hair, which the prophet of islam did which i admire and have grown long hair because of this.

I like long hair a lot, but it's also a type of "security" thing for me, I just feel more insecure with short hair for some reason. I don't really know why.

One of the reasons why I grow long hair too, but I dont limit myself to the shoulders. It is not written in any hadith that we should keep it just to shoulders.
Peace

First of all I would like to make it clear that in the description of most hadith state that the prophet had is hair between the shoulder and the ear lobe, this is sunnut, but I understand what you are saying that their is no statement in any hadith that I have read states the limitation of the length of hair a man can keep.
However I would also like to state that women in Islam have limits of hair length keeping, women have to keep hair that passes their breasts, because when a women dies the hair is a covering of her breasts for respect...I have read this in a hadith which I can't remember, but if I find out what it was ill get back to you, so what am getting at is woman have limitation so I believe we (men) do to... this is my opinion I am still keeping an opened mind about this limitation till I find more on the limitation.

I'm rather curious about your reply since a Sunni Muslim friend of mine told me that long hair on men is against Islam (I believe for the same reasons that some Christians consider long hair against some statements in the Bible).
Please clarify.

Well, my handle would explain part of the reason why I have long hair. Many people into Metal have long hair. It may sound conformist, but it's pretty silly to headbang without any hair to whip around. :)
Another reason is because I was an Army brat, and was forced by my parents to keep it short. I was kind of tramatize with the shorn look that I vowed never again to look like that. I haven't had short hair since 1986.

At first I was growing long hair because I liked the style of Modern Talking`s singer, then I got into Metal. But since now, most Metal bands have short hair, long hair is no longer a standard in Metal.
I just feel great with long hair, I have become spiritually better and I have learnt many things because of growing long hair.
Lesson learnt: "beware of the sharp-edged weapon called human being."

Another metal/rock fan here! Also short hair makes my face look far too round so it's nice to frame it to give it some structure...OK, so it's for headbanging OK? You happy bunny now?!? Heh.
Most metal musicans still have long hair

If you are referring to the Nu-metal (A.K.A. Mallcore) stuff polluting the airwave, then I understand where you are coming from. But that stuff is not real Metal.
Long hair is very much still a standard in real Heavy Metal, especially in the undgergound Metal scene. Check out bands like Nevermore, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Solitude Aeturnus, Sonata Arctica, Evergrey, plus a plethora of Death/Black Metal Bands. Long hair is still the majority.

I allow my hair to grow because that is what it does.
People who constantly cut their hair are making an effort to conform to a culture...or sub-culture.

I also got inspired by some of my favorite groups like Silverchair and Guns N Roses and Metallica to grow my hair. But also because when I lived with my mom she used to make me get a 1/2 inch buzz all around my head >:( I absolutely hated it, so now I moved out I can finally grow it long the way I like it.
Couple of things

I had always thought that long hair looked cool, and I had always wanted to try it. I tried once, went back to short, and am now happily going long again...I am a huge fan of metal, and that has definately influenced my decision, it is not the main reason behind it. I find that it looks much better and suits me well.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool nonconformist. I've also worn my hair long for 30 years. Long hair is a major part of who I am. I am just an old hippie and it's far more of a statement than an aesthetic thing. But, do I think long hair looks better than short - yes, no question. I don't feel I fit a subculture, more like I don't fit in the mainstream. Never have, never will.
It's a strange thing. I've known lots have people who have cut their hair and say they are just the same people - but they're not. They change their views too, to match their hair. OTOH, I know some people who are true hippies who have never had long hair. It's like the hair isn't essential, but if someone will cut it off there are few other principles they won't compromise as well.
