Gettin' a Job With Longhair

It's summer time, and I need money desperately. School is out, and I was hoping to get a part-time job somewhere. But my mom says no place would hire me cuz of my long hair. She doesn't like my hair anyway and she doesn't want me to get a job either, so screw what she says. Not many places are hiring cept fast food joints, and I really dont' want to work at any of them. I am going to check on a movie theater that somebody told me was hiring. I'll wear my hair in a ponytail, which is no big deal as I have been a lot anyway cuz of the heat. I don't see what the big deal is about how you look when you get a job. I don't know any clothes or hair styles or piercings that actually make a person be worse on the job. I am planning on getting my ears pierced, but I think I'll wait till after I already get a job. How have some of you other teens or anybody done while looking for a job? What did they say about your hair? Did you get a job? Thanks in advance.

Well Slash, I'm no teen. But I learned long ago I didn't want to work for anyone who made an issue of my hair.
Not sure what your interests or talents are but its pretty easy to figure out where your hair will be welcome and thought of as an asset - many restaurants, music stores, and some of the most "normal" businesses that are truely diversity oriented or don't have control issues with their employees.
Good luck.

I think alot is gonna depend on how you present yourself. Not so much how you LOOK exactly, but more your attitude and demeanor. A smile and a pleasant personality goes a LOOONG way! I've been a full time firefighter/paramedic for over 20 years and I've had long hair the entire time. It has never REALLY been an issue. It's always in a tail when I'm on duty and usually stuffed down the back of my shirt, so it takes a minute for people to realize it's actually long, but by that time I've established WHO I am and my personality has taken precedense over the long hair issue, (usually!). I just hafta remember to smile and be a person that people WANT to be around.
Good luck!

Good points. I worked psychiatric crisis for two years with a tail. That meant 2 or 3 take down and restraints of violent psych patients a day. I just stuffed my tail down the back of my shirt too. Only once did a patient get ahold of it in a takedown - even then, my peers and boss made no comment about it. They just helped me get free then we finished the takedown.
Volunteering with the fire department I did get my tail tangled in the velcro inside the cab of the fire engine once. Took some teasing for that one. Most of the female firefighters wore their hair long and just put it up when on duty. I never got to that point.
The key here is that us long hairs can work even hazardous jobs if we use common sense in controlling our hair. But if we get careless we can wind up in deep do do.

Try applying at a bookstore. I manage one and have long hair in a ponytail and most of them tend to be more liberal in regard to that sort of thing.
