Question for Hair Religion

I've been reading your website lately an taking tips(very good ones by the way). I do have one question for you. You say not to use mousse, gel, etc. At my job longhair is accepted but it needs to look neat. Right now I'm in the awkward phase of about 10 inches of growth all the way around. Not long enough for a ponytail yet. If I put no product in my hair it looks like a big mop. Since using no product is out of the question at work for me. Is there any gel and mousse that you can recommend that might not be as harsh on the hair but will hold all day?
thanks

I recommend not using extra products like that for the best care of your hair. Doesn't mean that you shouldn't use any or are all bad. If you have a need, use or want that gels, etc. can help you with then pick a good one and give it a try. Most of my advice comes from my own experience and I can't tell you what brand I use because I don't use any gel or mousse, I've had a bottle of Aussie gel sitting on the counter for the past 2 years collecting dust. There has been a lot of chatter about gels on the board lately so maybe someone else can give a better recommendation here (anyone listening)?
If they aren't giving you flack about it yet at work then don't give it a second thought, just keep to your plowing ahead with your day by day slow but steady hair growth and before you know it in a few months things will have changed more and it will become less and less of an issue that needs any extra thought.
Dep Level 8 or LA Looks Level 9

Both are alcohol free and do a fine job of holding hair all day long.

I can't post a new message thread from either work or home. I e-mailed the webmaster but have received no response. Have I been banned? What is going on?

If I could go without using anything in my hair, I would...
Just think of all the money I would save! Unfortunately, I have
a problem with those pesky flyaways--and sometimes my hair looks too dull and dry.
I am currently using Jheri Redding Cleanser (shampoo). One of the few shampoos
that uses ONLY sodium laurETH sulfate. I recommend it.
I cannot use ANY of the Aussie gels. They just make my hair too thick. So I use L'Oreal Melting gel. If you use just a bit, it will
only add shine and make it look less dry ...
and you won't even know it's there.
Add more and the effects will be greater, of course.
For an even nicer texture, I add a bit of Jheri Redding FRIZZ OUT.
The protein in it evens out the effects of the Melting gel.
I don't actually use more gel, it's just that I use a 50/50 combination
of the two gels.
I am not necessarily recommending this for anyone else...but it works VERY WELL for ME...
and that's all I am saying.

I don't like using gel, but I am working in an attorney's office as a law clerk this summer and can't get away with not using gel, unfortunately. I use Dep level 10 since my hair doesn't cooperate at 6 inches long!
