a little awkward

Let me get right to the point...Of course, I'm trying to grow my hair out, and I think it's reached a serious awkward phase. I had my hair buzzed last January of this year, and then I had it trimmed around February, I think. I haven't cut it since, and it's gettin' pretty shaggy. It's poofing out at the sides and the back looks pretty horrid, I must say. I would say that the back sort of resembles a mullet...and that's not really the look I'm going for at all.
I was thinking of getting the back and sides trimmed up while keeping the top growing. Has anyone tried this? Is there any point to it?
Also, I've noticed that some people with long hair keep some areas trimmed while other areas are let to grow. Like, keeping the sides trimmed. Has anyone tried this? Does anyone recommend this?
I need some recommendations! It's either let it grow or cut it tomorrow! Help!

Don't trim it, just let it grow, and don't worry about it. I know you hate the way it looks right now. I did, and I know most people do when they are first growing their hair. It WILL get better, you just have to give it time. If you want long hait this is just something you have to put up with for awhile. All trimming will do is make it shorter and just make it take that much longer to reach your goal.In my opinion a trim shouldn't even be considered until atleast the one year mark. I've only had one trim in the 2 years I have been growing mine, and then it was only half an inch to get rid of split ends. Try using some gel to tame it down a bit. Or wear a hat or bandanna when possible. And most of all, just don't worry about it or think about it too much at this point. And before you know it you'll look in the mirror one day and you'll Have long hair. Good Luck!

I think the thing to remember is, that kind of a trim will not only make it take LONGER to grow, but it will look WORSE (short back and sides, long front, that's a reverse mullet)

Your hair looks awesome. I think you look better with long hair; seems to fit you better. I can only hope my hair (when long) looks as good... my mom is always telling me how terrible it will look, and how I should only wear it in a ponytail when it gets long because otherwise I'll look like a girl (I disagree). I don't think a ponytail would suit me, and I don't intend on growing long hair just to wear it in a ponytail. Anyways, I find your site to be a good inspiration for these trying summer months to come. My hair is currently in the sixth month of growth, and it really doesn't look that good (basically, I'm worried that girls will pass me over).

My opinion: Do what you want while it grows out. I think everyone is different. I personally loved having a mullet while going into the awkward stage...I even got a few compliments!! Because of my summer job (I'm a full-time student), I cut the back and sides so it's easier to gel while I'm at work during the day, since I eventually want all one length. Right now I only have two layers, and I could, in a few months, probably cut off the last layer. I've enjoyed all the stages and trims I've had and looking forward to reaching my goal. Do what makes you happy...
Im at the same stage as you :)

Well, thanks for all the advice. You'll all be glad to hear that I did not get a haircut, and I'm still growing. Thanks a bunch.
