newbie with some questions

hi all,

i've been lurking here a while and i'd like to say that i'm impressed with the quality of the posts here (except for the 'makeover' ones lol).

i have some terminology questions - what exactly is meant by 'coarse' and 'fine' hair? would that be the diameter of the individual hairs? what would be the characteristics distinguishing coarse hair from fine hair? also, i'm not entirely sure what is meant by 'dry' hair (what would be the opposite of that?). i think i would classify my own hair as 'oily', because it gets oily to the touch after a day, and if i try to go two days without shampooing, my hair gets 'stringy' and starts to stink. but from what i've been reading, hair getting oily is normal, so would my hair still be considered 'oily', or normal?

some background on myself: i live in new york city. i'm asian, so my hair is very straight, and i keep feeling as if this is making my hair less manageable, even though i don't have any real basis to say that, since i've never had curly hair. (okay, i tried a perm once but didn't like it much. in fact i'd prefer to have selective amnesia regarding this.) years ago in high school, i kept my hair just under shoulder length, but after that, i kept my hair short. my borg wife of three years kept begging me to grow a ponytail since before we were married (i had a buzz cut then), so finally i gave up trying to resist, and simply stopped getting my hair cut. that was about two years ago, now she has the ponytail she's always wanted. (i only tie it up into a ponytail about half the time, though, having my hair free feels a lot more comfortable - maybe i'm just not used to having it all pulled back yet.) and yes, i like my long hair a lot better than my short hair, even though i always threaten to my wife that one day i'll cut it all off if she forces me to go shopping with her. but i think she's now onto my bluff.

thanks in advance.
