A few questions

Fisrt of all, how many hairs do you guys lose when you wash your hair? I never actually counted them until a few days ago. I finally decided to see how many it actually was, and it was actually more than I thought. The first time I counted them, I got 30, and the next time I washed I got 45. Also after it dries and I brush it out, I lose another 20-25.But after that I only lose just a few the rest of the time I brush, until I wash again. I know it's normal to lose about 100 per day, but I was just curious if it was normal to lose as many as I do when I wash. I'm pretty careful when I wash, but I do try to clean my scalp really good because I get build up if I don't clean really good. So, I couldn't really be much more careful and still get it clean.
Second of all, lately I've had had this really itchy spot on the back of my head right where I make my pony tail. It still itches even after I wash my hair. There's no build up or anything in this spot, so I have no clue what could be causing it. Any ideas?
And finally, I'm just curious what some of you do with your hair when you sleep? I have been just leaving it down, but since it has gotten longer it turns into a tangled mess when I wake up. Plus the last few months I've noticed when I turn over, my hair gets caught between my shoulder and the pillow and pulls it. I've tried a loose tail, and it's better than just leaving it loose, but it still gets pretty messy because the tail starts coming out. I haven't tried a braid yet, beacuse I don't even know if I COULD braid my own hair in the back, and I'm not even sure it's long enough anyway. It just barely touches my shoulders.
Sorry for the long post,I've just been wondering about all these things, so I finally decided to ask.
Thanks!

I have never counted the hairs. I accept that general wisdom here that it's about 100 hairs a day. I did notice that as my hair got longer (now mid back length) that the hair loss seemed more, but it was just because the hair was longer and more visible.
The itchy spot where the ponytail is is probably just a little extra body heat and tension on the scalp. I move my ponytail around a little. One day wear it a little high and the next a little low, etc.
I sleep with my hair down. I sleep on my sides, so when I am on my left side, I "sling" it all, over to the left, etc. I have learned from my wife to be care when slinging--it can hurt if you hit someone else in the face with it! I have become fairly efficient at doing this in the middle of the night when I turn over--otherwse, as you note, it gets caught, pulls, and hurts!

A million, give or take.

I usually wear it down.
I just moved my bed out to clean and found a SOFTBALL-sized hairball in the corner by my head! Six months...

Well, first of all, I wash my hair EVERY DAY.
I have no idea of just HOW MANY hairs actually go DOWN the drain,
but I do check out the shower floor and countmay 5 or 6 sometimes more.
I know MORE than that actually goes DOWN the drain, but I keep track
of the just the hairs on th shower floor. Not scientific but good enough for my "record keeping"!
AS TO THE PONYTAIL AREA ITCHING. One possibility could be fungus growth in
just that area (due to heat & moisture). If it is a fungus infection,
then you will need some special treatment in that area (cream or shampoo?) It should not itch, so you know *something* is wrong.
I sleep with my hair down, but I usually hold back my hair from my
face, at least, by using a hair pin on each side.
Sometimes I just flip it out toward the back.
Hope that helps and..
Good Luck!

Only 5 or 6? Wow!! I must be doing something wrong. And I never even thought about the ones I don't see that go down the drain. At this rate I'll be bald by the 3 year mark.

Actually you can put you tail in a rap. If you watch westerns you will note the Indians that have their tails in a leather rap. It is easier than a braid and will not bother you while you sleep. As for the itch, I've never had that problem. I've kept a tail for many years. It has been to my waist at one time. I just wash and comb. I use a hair tie until it breaks then get a new one. I do not let my hair hang free execpt on cool mornings I do not work and stay at home.
