Facial Hair

I have a few questions on facial hair. I am almost 19 and I've had the same amount of facial hair since 16. This is...a thin mustache line, some on lower chin, on my neck and underchin, and some along the sideburn area. I am still empty on my cheeks, under bottom lip, and not thick enough to grow decent sideburns. It's not thick enough to grow anything of quality. I can fool people through pictures as the right angle, lighting, etc. makes it look okay. However, stand next to me in person and you would understand. I've had comments such as "shave off that mexican gotee." All of the men on both sides of my family have the ability to grow a full beard. Anyway, I am curious as to what age other posters' full beards came in. Also, is it common to get some all at once (as I did at 16) and then it take several years for the rest to come in? This is a different type of patience. While I am guaranteed that come another year I will have the head hair I've always desired, I have no idea when I will be able to grow the beard/gotee that I want.

In addition to the Men's Longhair Hyperboard, I also participate in the Beard Community Bulletin Board. The question you posted here is repeatedly asked by teen visitors to the BCBB.
There is no cut-and-dry answer to your question of "how long", because it is different for every individual. Many guys (myself included) do not get any decent facial hair growth until their 20's or even 30's!
I have attached a link to a picture. In the one on the left I was 21 yrs old. As you can see, my moustache was rather lame. The picture on the right is from 20 years later. For me, getting the facial hair growth took time (as is also the case with getting the kind of long hair you want, eh?)

I think variety in life follows us to facial hair as well! I am 43. I had friends at 16 who had full, rough beards. I did not. I was able to grow my first beard at 23, but looking back at photos, they were a little thin. Sometime in the last ten years (my 30's) my facial hair became really rather thick. I still have a baby face, even at 43, so if I am completely shaven as I was last summer, I get carded at the grocery store or a restaraunt when I buy alcohol! Yet, I can grow a full beard.
Hang in there. I think for some of us it just comes gradually. That your male relatives have full beards should give you some hope that it will happen for you.

Just like you I'm 19 and I ain't got really thick facial hair. Though, I decidedto give a try growin sideburns. I reckon it looked awfully ridiculous the first three weeks of growth because it looked rather empty.
Now, after a month of sideburns growth, it looks better than I thought. Since some hair gets long, it fills the holes I had in the sideburns..
Anyway, if you're talkin about elvis' style, it's another story ;)

I know everybody wants what they dont have...but I think you should appreciate your relative lack of facial foliage. I had a full beard by age 13 or 14. Now, at 23, my full beard has decided to extend itself to my shoulders, chest and back....ACK!
I have pretty heavy beard growth; four or five days' worth of stubble looks like a beard on me. The problem is that the stubble is very course. I have had problems on many occasions where I have literally ripped up the chin or other parts of some unsuspecting coeds during longer sessions of, shall we intimate activities.
I'm not at the "shave a second time before I go out" stage yet, but I can only imagine it's coming soon to a face near me.

Geez man..that must suck. However, since your facial hair grows so fast, you could grow a terminal beard in a short time (if you ever wanted to).

I remember when I was 19, I had very little facial hair growth. I was also in the military at this time and was forced to shave even my peach fuzz that I had at the time. I do not know how accurate this is, but it seemed that the more I shaved, the thicker my facial hair would grow back. I was probably in my late twenties when I noticed I could grow a full beard.

I didn't start growing any facial hair until I was in my mid 20's.
I started out with a mustache and as time went by, my mustache got thicker and thicker.
I am now nearing 40 and just recently grew a decent beard. I shaved it off a few days ago but I am going to grow it back hoping it will come in a little thicker.
My problem is that I am half Native American Indian/Scandinavian. I have noticed that most Indian men who try to grow a beard can grow a mustache but only chin hair.
That looks ok but I don't think I have ever seen a full beard on a full blooded Indian?
I can grow a nice goatee but the side hair (cheeks and sideburns) is pretty thin and scarce.
Well, good luck and only time will tell how your facial hair is going to turn out.

dude, its hard to say when you will get all of your facial hair. it varies a lot from person to person. I'm only 15 and i have most of my facial hair (i can almost grow a full beard), but thats just me. for some people, the ability to grow facial hair is just not natural (this teacher at my school is like in his 20's or something, and barely has any facial hair). Dont worry about it though, cuz chances are if you have some now, you will get more later. its just a matter of how your body matures. However, the more you shave, the thicker your facial hair will come in. well, hope i could help :)
