Questions

I have two questions. One, the hair on the backside (at the base) of my head is long enough to where it forms " horizontal tails" sticking out. They look kinda cool, but the problem is, they only naturally stick out on the right side, and on the left side, the hair seems to curl inwards instead of outwards, thus I have to manually force them out, and they don't always stay. Is there any way to train them, or should I just forget about it until the hair is longer and no longer forms these "tails"?
Second, last week, I made the decision to cut my hair short, because it's really hot this summer, and because I want girls to notice me and not pass me by because they might not like the messy look. I can deal with the heat, but girls, eh... my (growing) long hair is a burden in that respect.
Some of you will be glad to know, I was lazy last week and thus didn't cut my hair. This week, the (still longish) hair is actually starting to look good (IMO), but it's still messy. I don't really want to cut it, yet I really think I should to have any chance for a girl to gain interest in me (and not pass me by because of how messy it is). Can someone counsel me on this "messy hair = no girls" issue before I break down and cut my hair short? Right now I don't look like a guy growing his hair long, I look like a bum who needs a haircut (and is crazy for girls enough to do it).

Welcome to the "awkward" stage! Enjoy the ride!

Two words: Hair spray. Otherwise, it's gonna do what it's gonna do.

There's a very simple answer to this question. The only resulting question is whether your affinity for girls will allow you to apply the answer to you:
Don't give a rat's ass what anyone thinks, especially girls.
You should also be aware that there are a great number of very attractive women in the world who are turned on by men who look less than "perfect". A disheveled appearance tends to imply a high degree of intelligence, as if to suggest that one has much more important things to concern oneself with than how they look (i.e. Albert Einstein, Tim Burton).
When I was going through my awkward stage, I had one clear goal in mind: growing my hair. And I wasn't about to let anyone stand in my way. I still faired rather well with the ladies, at least those who weren't put off by my appearance. Those who were... pfft... good riddens to shallow women.
Another thing to keep in mind...

Seasonal issues aside, if you choose the women you want to hang out with based on how they respond to your hair, you're never going to win.
As your hair gets longer, you're going to find women who wish your hair was shorter. If you cut it, you're going to find women who wish your hair was longer.
It all comes down to karma, and focusing on the one person you have to be able to please, first: You.
If you're happy with who you are and what you look like, it will show, and women will respond to that. It's a little thing called "honesty" - being true to yourself, and it's the single most difficult aspect of being human, to practice and master.

Yep, to get girls to notice you absolutly have to cut your hair, girls can't see you if your hair is more than a few inches long, hair is like an invisibility cloak. If you shave it bald they will probably be able to see you even better from a distance because of the shine it casts.
And cutting your hair short in the summer is the only way to stay cool, you cannot ever get hot in the summer if your hair is really short...the only reason people sweat is because there is hair on their bodies...right?

Perhaps I should have gone into greater detail into the reasoning behind my doubts, and then my thread will have been less likely to be made into a mockery.

Perhaps, but I think that we all already know where you are going with this line of thought. Every so often a teenager says the exact same thing but it speaks more of their small community-based world and their lack of experience in matters of the opposite sex and time in the real world. Don't take that as any kind of insult but listen to what people have said in their responses, there is some good advice along with the quips. They can only respond to what you said and what you said was a bit absurd, eh?

Firstly, I would like to say that even know that I am happily married, I have found myself in more conversations with women lately with "longish" hair. The important thing is how you fell inside and this is what is attractive. If you look like you have low self-esteem and are being shy with a messy look, just remember it is not just your hair that is at fault. Secondly, I am cooler with longer hair than with short hair. I have worn my hair short for 34 years and even was bald 2 years ago. With short hair or no hair, the sweat from your head just evaporates or the hair dries faster and thus you will feek hotter. With longer hair, the sweat is absorbed through the hair, making your hair wet and wet will cool your scalp and the back of your neck. I sometimes wet my hair a couple of times a day and feel cooler than I have ever felt and my hair now takes 2 hours to dry -- 1 hour to dry outside in the heat.
Here are some suggestions/inspirations:
1) Stop thinking about how you look or how you think women will see you as and enjoy the summer. You may find yourself hooking up with a female who thinks you look cute.
2) Remember that we judge ourselves more harshly than others do.
3) Think about November and December rolling around sooner than you think and you will have grown 2.5 to 3 inches of hair or more.
4) This is your last bad hair summer..(2 more months)
5) Can you not last a couple of months without a woman?
Cheers!
