Long Hair Friendly Hair Stylists?
Posted by BroadwayBandit on June 28, 2003 at 00:44:15: Previous Next
Hi all -- Just found your site from a related page of links, and first let me say that this is a really active and useful board. I have already been able to find answers to my "how do i keep that wet look" question, as well as obtain some other good advice.
I used to sport the long hair (didn't cut it for 3 years), and now I'm thinking about doing it again ... only thing is, I'm in a new city, and need to find a good stylist who won't just chop things off.
Any advice for how to find one? Or can anyone recommend a good place in the Boston area? I'm willing to take a step up from Supercuts, but I can't afford some of the crazy-expensive places I've seen around town.
Thanks for the help!

If your growing your hair out I would stay away from salons and stylists. ANY cutting will only prolong the akward stage. It might look good for a few weeks but soon you'll regret it. So stay away from scissors!

Don't listen to the people who tell you to stay away from salons, unless you want that jungle/street/bag man look. If you want nice looking hair, you have to find a good stylist that is willing to work with you.
I'd suggest to ask people with longer hair (women included) who they go to for hair care. Of course, ask people who have the type of hair you'd like to have.
I get mine trimmed every 12 weeks now (I was getting it trimmed every 8 weeks at first). The picture shows 2.5 years of growth. Yes, hair does grow if it is trimmed. It will grow LONGER if it is trimmed and you take off splits, etc..
Good luck!

When you cut hair, it becomes shorter - to expect it to grow longer is biologically impossible. It will merely continue to grow at the same rate as previously and catch up with where it was before the trim. How long that takes depends on individual growth rates and the amount cut off.
You don't need to see a stylist to have healthy hair, you just need to look after it with regular washing and grooming (and conditioning if it needs it). Failing to see a stylist does not mean you end up with the jungle/street/bag man look. That is entirely up to how you look after it.
Having said that, there's nothing wrong with trimming if you want it to remain at a particular length or to tidy the ends.
Just curious, Mark...

...is that your terminal length, or is your hair cut to maintain that length, or is it growing out from the last trim/cut which was (date)...?

The last trim was September '02. I'll probably get it trimmed again next September as this is about the length I want to keep it.
Still curious, Mark...

...who does the trimming, a professional stylist or no? Whichever, I think your hair/style looks terrific!

She's a professional stylist. Her last piece of advice to me was "leave it" At that time I had been having it shaped around my face. I'm following her advice....
Actually, you're being Illogical

: "When you cut hair, it becomes shorter"
No kidding, Maynard!
Did I ever day anything about cutting it all off? Gosh, you guys are sooooo sensitive to any cutting. Why do you think women's long hair usually looks better than most men's? Because they take care of it AND get TRIMS (did you read that?) when needed.
I'm sorry, most guys with long hair seem to have long hair just for the sake of having long hair. This is what gives long haired men a bad image.
Never trim your hair? Can you say Cousin It?
You're taking me out of context

I am not in the slightest bit sensitive about cutting hair - I occasionally have mine cut to tidy it up. I was merely debunking the myth that cutting in some way encourages growth. My statement was just that - a statement of fact; cutting hair makes it shorter. Plain and simple. I am not being illogical.

He said he USED to sport long hair so im guessing hes growing it out agian. And if your hair is short and you want to grow it out long it'll take longer if you cut your hair.
P.S. Trimming your hair does not make your hair grow faster.

": P.S. Trimming your hair does not make your hair grow faster."
Who said that?
I said that your hair will still grow long, even with needed trims.
Sorry for your misunderstanding ;-)
