I'm thinking about trying long hair.

I've been reading the board recently, and I have been considering growing my hair long.
The problem is I own a business and my appearance is very important. What kind of long hair style would still give me a professional look? How would I deal with the awkward phase and maintain a professional look.
I thought about perming it while it was still short but too long for what is now my normal style. I thought that I could then possibly let it fall where it may, and it still look decent.
Thanks for your suggestions,
Penguin
Easier than many others

If you own a bussiness, the only question is... how much direct contact with customers, and prospective customers you have. Take into consideration how that would affect sales... otherwise, hire someone to deal with clients. No one enforces a dress code to you. Just beware the awckward stage. Its not a short term thing, not if you're seriously into it.

Going through an awkward phases and looking professional...
that will take some doing and lots of luck unless you have extraordinary hair!
Slicking it down with gel and getting it into a tail as soon as physically
possible might be the best way to look 'neat & professional."
Also, you might come right out and explain to your clients
that you are in the process of growing out your hair...
and not getting ready for a role as a Caveman in some film...
If all of that doesn't work...and you still want to be a Longhair...
then might I suggest...
prayer!
Good Luck...
whatever you decide!

I was talking to a guy who's a building contractor and he described exactly the same issue. He keeps his short in the front and ties up the back when he's at work (see the thread on "how to tie your hair") and honestly it's not obvious! His hair is coarse, and he's past the awkward stage; your mileage may vary. I'm trying this method myself now.

Dear Friend,
Not everyone goes through an awkward stage. That is mostly for us with curly hair This is where trims come in. Let the top grow, while keeping the neck neat. I do not permit shaving nor trimming my nexk with a buzzer,l for the first thing you know they have created a stupid line which gets higher and higher so that you have some sort of catfish style, and you get disgusted and cut it off. Jusk keep the neck neat. I have sandy dark blond hair, and I bleach all the color out of the hair on my neck and it disappears so to speak, and I allow my stylist to trim it with sissors about every 8 weeks.
Then it will beging to grow over the ears. Once it is too long to comb back, then over the ears, and then trim the ends so they are neat and blend in with the back. The top is still growing.
Seriously, some people do not have an awkward stage.
If you hair is curly, and you need to look formal during this period, then you should find a good old fashioned beauty shop and tell the stylist that you want a roller set that will neaten up your hair but still make you look professional.
And finally, shampoo less. Rince the dust out of your hair as often as you wish, but do not use the detergent unless you think there is a serious build up of spray, gel, lanolin, setting agents, conditioners, etc.

It's a difficult thing to just try unless you are planning to use a wig. Hair grows slowly and keeps changing as it gets longer.
But, it won't be as much an issue as you think it will be. "Try it" and see.

Think it's all in the eye of the beholder as you let it grow out. Actually, in a Country that is suppose to be free, it seems idiodic that how one wears their hair should have ANY bearing on a job.
With the "awkward stage" you have to be "inventive." Changes are constant. Try "anything" that will "pull-off" an "new" temporary look. But...........ONCE you've got the start of a Tail, you'll be much more in the drivers seat.
Oh yes, for what it is worth.........I just saw some Bobbie-Pins in a store that look like they have streaks of hair across them, come in assorted colours and claim to be about invisable. You might want to check that one out as a possibility?
Good luck!
You may want to

check out Stanley Bey's site. I believe he uses gel to get the "business shark" slicked back look. It looks very professional.
I don't use any products on my hair unless it's in a ponytail. I tame the fly-aways with Aussie Sprunch Spray hairspray. But, I'm also WAY past the awkward stage, and don't have to worry about looking professional either.
Styling products that don't contain alcohol would be a good option for you.
