thin, flat hair...

I've been growing my hair out for a year now, and it's just below my chin in the front and a little below my shoulders in the back. Anyway, I was wondering if hair goes through cycles where it doesn't have much volume, because it is really sticking to my head nowadays. Also, can anyone recommend any shampoos to improve volume?

Im not sure of brands, but you could try a good make of shampoo that is made for volumising, also anti dandruff shampoo can make hair look a bit thicker sometimes.

Not sure about 'stages', but I would think the biggest influence
on hair would be humidity. I have similar hair type (thin, flat) and
have found daily shampooing and very light conditioning on just
the ends helps alleviate the flatness.
There's alot of 'volume' shampoos out there, you will have to
experiment to see what works best for your hair. I use Aussie
Mega shampoo & conditioner, have also tried Herbal Essence
'Volumizer' but did not notice a difference.

After shampooing, try applying an egg-shaped dollop of volumizing styling moouse and dry it with a diffuser attatchment on your hairdryer -- and "scrunch" your hair all over as you are drying it -- when dry, brush it out lightly with a wide bristle brush -- you should notice a marked difference in the volume.
What is a dollop? :D

I've always wondered what a dollop was... has anyone tried figuring out the "roots" of this word?

dollop [DOLL-uhp]
A small glob of soft food, such as whipped cream or mashed potatoes. When referring to a liquid, dollop refers to a dash or "splash" of soda water, water and so on.
ps: and in this case...
