For themselves or for others...

'This site is dedicated to those men who take the effort to maintain their long hair, for themselves, or for others.'
This bit of text is taken from the Home page of the main longhair site. It struck me as odd that the words 'or for others' are included, especially as we spend a lot of time discussing hair as something over which we have the sole right as individuals. I wouldn't 'maintain' long hair just for someone else. I have it for me as it's part of my identity.
Anyone got any views on this ?
Have I misunderstood what Victor was getting at ?
Is there anyone on the board who has long hair to please someone else but not themselves ?

Not in my case, but I do know of two male and four or five female longhairs who only have long hair to please their partners. I think it's a valid form of words in the context.
for myself.....

im doing it for myself and even though it looks bad (poofy/big) I plan to keep growing indefinitely. Though, it feels like theres a SMALL part of me doing it for the attention. I dunno, mostly for myself, but theres that small part of me doing it because EVERY guy I see has some short styled/spiky hair cut. It just gets lame. I have wanted long hair since grade 7.......funny how the thing you want to do the most, is the thing you always deprive yourself of.
So far ...

I am only doing for me...
As for others...well, they probably don't care for it...

I think it's supposed to imply that women are welcome here too.
Me! I'm one who is...

I did not grow my hair for myself, I did it for my partner. He loves it on me and over time it has grown on me as well (no pun intended)

I don't think you misunderstood Victor at all.
Everyone does things for different reasons. If you're doing it for yourself...good for you!
But don't put someone down if they grow their hair for someone else (same goes for if they decide to cut it for someone else).
It's still ultimately the indivual's personal decision. The reasons can vary, though.
