I am traing to teach martial arts and like alot of people here I am in the middle of the akward stage. My hair is to short to put into a pony tail but long enough to get in the way. When training on mats we are not allowed to wear anything metal are hard plastic so I can't use clips and pins. Any suggestions on how to get it under control. I am really new to this and all I know is that I know very little

No metal an' no clips, eh? Might I suggest a bandana? unlike a hat, it has no rim to interfere with takedowns and landings and such. Wearing a bandana would essentially be no different than wearing a shirt on your chest.

Yeah like nut said, a bandana is perfect. I take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and nothing is less forgiving of hair than that. It's even worse for me because I have even more hair to get stuck in places than you do. Being in a triangle with your hair stuck in the guys legs; hair caught under you while you have somone in the guard; hair stuck in somone's grip when they grab my lapel; I've had my share of problems, and lost a few strands because of it. But I've worked out a system that seems to work fairly well. First I tie my hair back in a pony tail. Second I put on a bandana folded in half over my whole head. Then I put on another bandana rolled up and tied tight over the first bandana to hold it in place. This usually holds up pritty well. When people choak me from the rear, neck crank me, or just grab my head for whatever reason it usually stays on. All I usually have to do is re-do the ponytail and stick it back under my gi or my shirt. Hope this helps.

well are you talking about your basic karate class or something a bit more intense?
can you get the back in a ponytail atleast? if it's not something really extreme mabye you could do that and try a bandanna to keep the bangs in place or mabye try a little bit of gel, i know i dont like using the stuff but it can do miracles in a situation where it HAS to stay put
how far in the awkward stage are you? once it gets long enough to tail it should be fine, i do both tai chi and wrestling and have it in a tail and it usually stays out of my way
by the way what form of martial-arts are you training in?

You do wrestling with nothing but a tail and it stays out of your way? You are a better man than I.
