Too much, to little shampoo?

I know itīs a VERY stupid question but my hairdresser always used more shampoo to wash my hair than I use at home. How much shampoo do you use for washing hair? Is there much foam when you shampoo it?

I used to try and use as little as possible because I never really wanted to have to spend too much on replenishing haircare supplies.
However, nowadays I use a lot more as I can see how the foam would reduce the amount of friction involved while shampooing, making the whole thing far less traumatic for your locks.

I use no more than enough to equal the size of a quarter. The only part of your hair should be concern with is on your scalp. The rest of your hair is naturally cleansed when the shampoo runs down the length when you rinse it out of your scalp. The same rule applies to conditioner.
If you're getting foam, you've put too much in. There should be no more suds on your hands than what you normally get when you, for example, wash your hands before dinner.

That amount of shampoo has never been enough for me to remove the smell of smoke after being in a pub all evening for example. I really do have to foam it up for the process to be worthwhile.
If you're a daily shampooer I suppose this works just fine though.

I can understand your concern about getting rid of pub odor, however, the foam is really doing anything more to clean your hair than you might think it is.
Shampoo is designed to do one thing: cleanse your hair of grease and grime. The soap you apply to your scalp does that for you. The foam is merely the bi-product of too much soap, but it's really serving no viable function. Otherwise, you're only wasting soap.
If your hair is really that greasy/dirty, you'd be doing yourself - and your hair - a greater service by by applying only enough soap to create a mild lather (again, about quarter-sized full), rinsing, and then repeating, as often as necessary, to clean your hair. As you do so, you'll notice less of a lather because the first application already got most of the grease/grime out.

Interesting - I'll experiment. Thanks ;) I'm obviously being misled by advertisements for shampoo depicting ladies in the shower with small foam mountains on their heads.

You're welcome.

Foam sells shampoo and dish detergent. However, an effective natural and gentle shampoo, not foam, is what you need to really clean your hair. In fact, you must always thoroughly remove foam from your hair. If not, your hair will be dull and your scalp will itch.

Yep. I sure as heck hope no one here piles his hair on top of his head to wash it! That's knots waiting to happen.

Are you a daily shampooer? I saw your picture on this photo page about the people here in this forum and I thought you have just great hair, but it is almost long. How do you manage to wash it every day? It must be wet all the time ;)

Sorry, my message was a bit unclear. What I meant was that if you do wash your hair everyday then you wouldn't need to use as much shampoo. I certainly don't since I can't handle going through the wet hair procedure day-in-day-out. Oh, and thanks for the kind words!

I think it depends on hair type - I tried using the coin-sized
quantity of shampoo but not only was it more difficult to wash
(the 'friction' mentioned in previous reply) but my hair would
look flat much sooner. I have fine (not thick), straight hair.
I found Aussie shampoo in a large container with pump - gives a
fairly exact amount of soap every time.
As for conditioner - very small amount for me and only on the ends.
Not a stupid question but you need to experiment to find what works
for you. :)
