how to get rid of waves

Now my hair is not naturally wavy, I was straight haired as a child but neglected my hair as most kids do. Gave myself a few haircuts : ) drove my parents crazy. During my teenage years I tried a lot of things and different styles that really killed my hair, left it as a wavey, frizzy mess on top. The sides are still pretty straight, but I'd like to know how to get rid of those waves.
should I just shave it all off an start from scratch?

Human hair changes from childhood to adulthood naturally. If you shave your head now, it will only grow back the way it is now. From the description you gave of your hair being straight with a little wave, you, my friend, have perfect hair for growing long. My hair is the exact description that you gave of yours. My hair was as straight as a new borns childs innocence when I was a child. But now it is wavey like you say yours is. And very thick I might add. The wave is what will give your hair volume. Board straight hair tends to look scarce and thinned down when long, but wavey hair has a good volume and body to it. Your a lucky few, dude, stick with it. Peace!

thanks, and I do plan on growing it long (while I'm young!) but right now it looks bad. The last cut I got was pretty bad and didn't get rid of all the waves like I wanted too.
my main problem is the hair on top is just too damn wavy for my liking, the sides and back are straight, and the front is pretty straight too. I think the problem was I used to brush it back when i was going a young teen, sometimes it would tangle, tear, and some waves gradually developed. They're not really tight waves that are close to the scalp though, I can play around a little, but in this current caesar haircut I have make it very noticeable.
I also have a problem with dryness, it never gets frizzy or puffy, just dry.

My hair was like that and I think we have generally the same type of wavy hair. Personally I love it. With the weight of the hair holding itself down most of the hair looks straight while the ends it gets all curly like. But back to the dryness. How often do you wash your hair? The more hair you have the less often you have to shampoo it. You should still wrince it regularly to wash out the dirt you pick up in the air, but the shampoo strips your hair of natural oil. You do not want to get rid of to much of that oil especially if your hair seems dry. Try using less shampoo less often and only work it into the scalp, enough get's on the length of the hair just from that. Also, if you're not already using some, try conditioner or a different kind. If you weigh your hair down with perhaps some deep conditioner it might get the hair to hang more straight. A good conditioner should also help with the dryness. Personally I use aussie moist shampoo, moist conditioner and 3 minute miracle deep conditioner. By the way, thanks guys for recommending that stuff.

thanks, if you're curious my hair is similar to that of Ryan Phillipe, he's the guy who's married to reese witherspoon. If I get it cut short it will look like regular straight hair for abour 3-4 weeks, then those damning waves start to appear on top.
I probably wash it too much with shampoo, about 5-6 times a week. Perhaps I should cut back to 3-4. The aussie shampoo stuff seems to be pretty popular. Perhaps I should stop with the generic shop rite brand....

IMHO, you have curl in your hair, like it or not. Rather than trying to force your hair into some kind of ridiculous, contrived false straightness, why not embrace the curl and try to make it look as good as possible? While it's short, you're fine washing it 2-3 times a week, but make sure you use a good conditioner to keep it from getting too frizzy.
Definitely stop the generic shampoo

That is probably the source of the dryness. Use a conditioner also.
I have wavy hair, but if I use a blow dryer on the cool setting it straightens my hair (using a large round brush while drying).

Oh no - don't say such a thing! You wanna scare us board-straight
long hairs away? :-)
I just picked up Aussie Real Volume shampoo & conditioner, the
package said it is for 'fine, limp hair.' Limp? :-)
Please accept my apology...

I apologize for the straight hair comment. All long hair is cool no matter what type. Not trying to put anyone down in any way. Please forgive my inconsiderateness. Peace!

*Gasp* Perish the thought! I'm sure there is something that can be done without such drastic measures. Are the hairs on top split at all? Trimming may help it to look better. There are also tons of products that help to tone down frizziness...I use a gel called Straighten Out Mega Hold Styling Gel (it's pink). Just a touch helps to straighten out the waves and cut the frizz. Sometimes I comb it through particularly yucky parts with a comb (NOT a wide-toothed one), and that seems to help. There's also stuff like Frizz-Ease, or perhaps a leave-in conditioner will help. Just don't use too much product, or your hair will be all gacky and ladies like me won't be able to get our fingers through it ^_^
As a last resort, you can flat-iron or blow-dry it, but that's just terrible for the hair. If you're willing to wait, I've noticed that my naturally wavy hair gets straighter as it gets longer. It's almost at waist-length and only holds a wave if I braid it while it's wet.
Well, that's all the ideas I can think of...try some of them and let me know if anything helps. Good luck!

My hair is pretty much like yours in its natural state, a bit wavy and annoyingly frizzy on top. No conditioners and such will get rid of the wave problem, although the Frizz-Ease conditioner and similars can indeed tame the frizziness.
But if you do hate the waves like I do then the only thing that will get rid of them (besides a harsh chemical straightening) is applying heat on it, using a blow-dryer simultaneously with a fine-toothed comb. Pull the hair straight using the comb and your fingers to hold it while you use the dryer until you get the desired texture. This would have to be done after every wash of course and some people also use a straightening iron as a complement afterwards if the hair is long enough or too full. This doesn't damage the hair as much as people use to think if it's moderately strong, I've been doing it for the last decade and mine is terrific.
I recommend doing it for anybody who doesn't mind spending some more minutes with their hair care, and just gets frustrated to no end while trying to grow it. I got demotivated a lot during my adolescence and cut it several times because of comments like "you hair is this way like it or not and there's nothing you can do about it". Tsk, when will others understand that we like what we like, period? ^_~ Nyao, out.
