14 years long, cutting it tomorrow

Interesting board. Ironically, I found it while looking for pictures of short hair to hand over when I get my hair cut tomorrow. It's been 14 years now that I've had my hair wavering between half way down my back to below my belt.
Why?
Well, it's been fun, don't get me wrong. Most of my girlfriends (including my wife) were attracted to me because of my long hair (surprise, surprise :). Heck, I grew my hair because my girlfriend suggested it (plus she supported me through the lame "middle" stages, that always helps). It was nice having women I'd never met run their fingers through my hair in clubs, and I loved the response I always got when I gently dragged my hair down the length of a woman's naked body. Ok, it was more than just sexuality. I always figured that my having long hair was kind of a self-screening of friends, employers, whatever -- if they were interested in someone with long hair, they passed my "open mindedness" test.
However, I rarely wear it down enough anymore; I'm tired of missing midday workouts because it would take too long to dry; I used to look at other longhairs as kindred spirits, but now it seems like all the longhairs I see (L.A. Calif, USA) have that I-desparately-need-a-makeover look so well described a few posts ago; In fact, all the same people I share socio-political views with, cut their hair years ago, though they kept their beliefs intact; Plus, I think my wife thinks it's passé.
Good luck to all, both long and struggling to get there. Just keep in mind that the concept of a "longhair" runs deeper than just the length of your hair.

Maybe the Longhaired guy you were yesteryear...
is no longer the man you are today...
Good Luck!

Good that you found this board before going for the chop! An interesting post, enjoy the new appearance.

To define one's being by the length of the hair on their head is the smallest possible way of thinking. The only true judgment of a person is in their actions. I hope all who write so often on this board remember that the love of the hair on your head is nothing more then a facination, not who you are.
Enjoy the new look!

This, I must say, I totally agree with. Very well said. The more I search myself for the true meaning as to why I want long hair (not that I spend a lot of soul searching over my hair), the only answer I can come up with is fascination for it. Not who I am, why I exist on this earth, buckin' the norm to prove a point about myself, etc, just pure fascination because I like how it looks and feels on me. If my hair just ended up looking like total crap long no matter what I tried to make it look good, I would probably cut it. Thank God that isn't the case, but if it were I wouldn't keep it. This is only my personal view, and I respect the different views of others. Peace!

And that was your first and last mistake.
This is what happens when people change their appearance at the request/advice of others, rather than doing it for themselves. I'd say good luck in whatever you do, but you really doomed yourself on this one. It doesn't surprise me, at all, that you've decided to cut it.
Such is life...

I have to say that I can't see the damage in growing your hair long at the initial request of another. It's only hair, and for the guy to keep it long 14 years, obviously he must have liked the idea himself. He could very well have said no from the start, but thought "What the heck, I'm game, lets give it a go!" Suppose someone request that I try frog legs. I could say no, or I could try them and end up eating them for the next 14 years because I find out that I like them and my taste for them changes and I stop eating them. The way I see it, the fascination the guy has had in the past for his long hair is no longer as strong or even existant, so he is ready for a change and maybe even looking forward to less maintenance that 14 year old hair requires. No harm in trying something that someone brings to your attention, unless it could potentially harm you or kill you. Peace!

Hmmm... good points. I retract my original comment.

His reasons might be different but my main reason why one day I will probably cut my hair is just that I know one day my crazy family genes are going to kick in and I am not going to end up with one large comb over just because I enjoy long hair. Once my hair starts going thanks to mother nature, I am kojak. :)
I do agree with the "who you are" comment. Whether I have had long hair or no hair, I have remained the same person inside.

Well, now you won't have to use so much shampoo and conditioner! All kidding aside though, everyone needs a change once in a while. I agree with what everyone else has been saying, how your hair does not make you who you are. I myself am a self-proclaimed hair fanatic, but that's just me. Good luck with your cut, and enjoy having a lighter head! Ah, short showers, how I remember thee...

From experience, I'd guess that most women who like long hair on men have long hair themselves. The posts on this board also indicate the same, Sounds from the above as though that applies to you too?

Yep, I do. It sits a little higher than my waist. I actually can't remember the last time I could take a short shower though.
Interesting observation. I guess I am a fan of long hair in general, but of course I would notice it more on a guy ^_^

Maybe it would be a good idea to not cut it all off at once. Cut it to mid back, see if you like it better that way, then to shoulderblade length, etc.
