does trimming make it grow faster?

hi again, guys :D
i'm still growing my hair out, i haven't caved this time, and i'm almost out of the awkward stage, BOOYAH!
anyhoo, the reason i'm here is to ask about the whole trimming rumour. a friend of mine who had shoulder length hair once said that trimming the ends makes it grow quicker. he said that once he trimmed his ends, he grew 3-4 inches of hair in 2 months. which HAS to be bullshit.
my hair (after 9-10 months of growing from an almost shaved head) is roughly 14-15 centimetres long. thats almost 6 inches. which isn't bad. what i wanna know is will it grow much faster if i trim the ends? i'm only lookin for personal experience here, i wanna know from people who have done it.
anyhoo, thanks guys :D

Patently false. Despite all the vitamin/suppliment talk here, I believe that for the most part, you have a genetically- and physiologically-predetermined hair growth rate. All you can do is feed it as well as you can so it grows healthy. Hair growth is a long term commitment and you need to take that into consideration and be very patient.
However, if you ARE patient, you may want to trim along the way so you look good along the journey, and not just when you reach your destination. If you have curly hair, this can be excruciatingly long, but for me it's a must. I'm not willing to look "bad" for 2-3 years while my hair grows out. I'm more interested in looking my best at whatever length I have. FWIW/YMMV/IMHO. :-)
Good luck!

Hmmm, there are more ways to skin a cat. I'd rather go through that awkward phase and get it over with and reach that "long hair" phase asap instead of trimming off that precious stuff. Because at certain stages you will NOT look that hot and trimmming it won't make much of a difference to others. You could use certain products to tame those curls, which is what I did. Pins and all that other metal crap were not an option to me ;p
Excruciatingly long just wasn't an option to me.

I was wonering about trimming also, didn't know if it was true or not, I just started growing mine out this year, I cut it around May of this year, and I do have 3 and a half inches right now, I know that's not very long but for 3 months I didn't think it was too bad...so maybe it was because I had cut it, could be why it grew fast...don't know for sure, just wondering like the rest of you out there, if trimming does make it grow faster, I will continue reading into this.
Thanks,
Joe

No, it won't - it's pure BS. Some falsely believe that trimming hair frequently makes hair grow faster. Hair grows at the same rate regardless of how frequent it is cut. It is largely a matter of heredity. Other factors that could affect hair growth are malnutrition, debilitating disease, certain kinds of medications like oral contraceptives, and severe hormone imbalance.

Maybe it's just my imagination, but it seems like my hair grows faster when I get more sleep.

True. When I sleep the summer months away, sometimes 12 hours each day, I get an inch more of growth in no time! Also, sleep is part of a healty lifestyle, which, in turn, provides better hair growth.

Think about this: HOW would the CUT END of the hair get the 'signal' of: "Hey, I've been CUT! Let's grow FASTER!" . . .to the ROOTS...
where the hair does ALL of its actual growing?
Especially since hair is...well....DeaD!

Well, lets see how I can explain this without sounding geeked...Yes! trimming hair every 7-8 weeks will make your hair grow faster. This happens because your hair is dead and the hair on your ends are the oldest. Trimming the hair on the ends helps the hair not to split. Keep in mind if you dont trim your ends the condition of your hair will tarnish. My advice to grow your hair out fast is to drink plenty of water, take a multi vitamin and trim every 7-8 weeks. The number one reason for slow hair growth is poor maintenance and a mild nurished scalp. Take care of your hair and it wil GROW!!!

I'd just like to correct some misinformation here:
: Well, lets see how I can explain this without sounding geeked...Yes! trimming hair every 7-8 weeks will make your hair grow faster.
No. Hair growth rate is independent of cutting. One has nothing to do with the other.
:This happens because your hair is dead and the hair on your ends are the oldest. Trimming the hair on the ends helps the hair not to split.
That is not true either. Trimming can cut off already existing splits, but it doesn't prevent splits. In fact, an uncut hair has a tapered end with no place for a split to start unless there is damaged. A cut hair has a blunt end. Just as a log splits at the end when weathered, so a hair can start splitting at the end. Or it can start splitting anywhere if there is damage.
: Keep in mind if you dont trim your ends the condition of your hair will tarnish.
May tarnish.
:My advice to grow your hair out fast is to drink plenty of water, take a multi vitamin and trim every 7-8 weeks. The number one reason for slow hair growth is poor maintenance and a mild nurished scalp. Take care of your hair and it wil GROW!!!
I think we need to separate growth and damage. There are completely different sets of activities to control each. Growth is primarily controlled by diet, genetics, and general wellbeing (stress is not good for hair).
Damage is controlled by proper maintenance of the hair. This primarily involves proper grooming techniques, including washing, conditioning, styling, brushing, trimming, etc.
Brushing can be one of the most damaging activities to hair. Men especially, if they don't know what they are doing, tend to brush or comb with a quick motion of the arm. The end of the hair becomes like the end of a whip, thrashing about faster and faster as the come reaches the end of the hair. Proper brushing/combing should involve a stroke that is slow, especially at the apex of the hair.
In some cases, split ends can travel down the length of the hair, but this really depends upon the hair type. Some hair types have splits that stop shortly after the source of the split. In this situation, trimming does little, if anything, to promote hair length. For hair type where splits travel, trimming can help. But even here, only the damaged hairs need be trimmed.
In all cases, trimming SHORTENS hair. It cannot make hair grow faster. In some situations it can reduce future hair loss at the ends, but such hair loss is likely to actually be in the form of more trims.

Hi!
I know hair grows from the roots, so trimming the ends should make no difference. But my partner claims that if you get split ends, they break off, limiting hair growth. I don't know if this is true, but I haven't cut mine!
Cheers, Barry

Ummm, Trickster, is your friend on drugs? (just kidding) It is possible if he's genetically programmed for that kind of growth, but I REALLY doubt it. That's pretty quick. But hey, anything's possible.
