Growing it out
Posted by Garr on August 07, 2003 at 21:59:28: Previous Next
Hi I'm growing it out from very short.
I'm shooting for the top and sides to be just below the jawline
and the back just below the shoulders.
Anywho it's in that horrid phase where it just sticks up everywhere
and I almost cut it.
Is there any way to gain some control over it
It's not long enough to tail and I fear wearing a hat could slow down growth.
Any advice.

Other than gel, there isn't much you can do... just wait it out.
And as far as I know, a hat has nothing to do with slowing down hair growth. You can take a multivitamin to speed it up a bit too.

a hat doesn't slow growth and in my state of arizona, it probably helps as you don't get constant sun damage as you have protection from the every day is sunny routine .
I remember back when everyone thought that hats caused you to go bored. :)

Getting past that point for me was trying to "invent" the style of the day. And for myself, I made it a fun task! Almost anything goes. Perhaps you can just go with the flow also? The 1st big break comes when the hair in back is long enough to get into a low Pony Tail. (Less than a year.) BUT.........you have to double-up the Pony Band because at that point there isn't enough hair yet to reach that Band. When the front Bangs can be tucked behind your ears you'll see a happy transformation. (But wild hair in back still pluffs-out.) I just used a couple of Bobbie-Pins to hold these hairs in close...........so what if one resorts to that........it is only temporary and you will look really neat through much of that awkward stage. This makes for a very easy ride.......but I know alot depends on what kind of hair you have. Little by little more hair can be gathered and put into the Pony and the Bobbie Pins are then history. (By the way, I recently saw some in a store that are almost undetectable because hairs are part of the design in the metal, and there are different colours of metal to choose from so that you can match your hair colour as close as possible.
The "Hat" idea is good also, but you might not want to wear it all the time. It won't stop your hair from growing. Good luck, and have fun with the awkward stage as best as you can. Actually, I had a Blast with mine!

Yes...I agree...a couple of hair pins in back....pushed way in and matching
your hair color.
I have also found a bit of SPRAY-Gel (by L'Oreal) helps hold in
those shorter hairs.

Oh, so Luckskind resorted to this also? (Well, I think everyone knows of his great wisdom and if he endorses........it MUST be a good idea and I would tend to want to follow his always helpful advice. Thank goodness he contributes so often to this board.) It really isn't all that hard to do, (The Hair Pins) and can help you see that "look" you want much quicker. (Almost as if you had reached the end of the 18 month wait in a way.) But YES............after Shampoo and Conditioner (Aussie), let the hair dry enough so as to be "damp" and apply Aussie "DEWPLEX." It helps alot as Luckskind found with the "Spray-gel" in holding in some of the hairs. That coupled with the Hair Pins should give you a real boost when looking in the mirror early-on in the growth stages. If you don't plan on styling with a Pony Tail, then just use the Hair Clips. Still looks good. The Bangs are now staying in back of the ears anyway and the rest is falling down by itself. The main thing I think is to just go through the "awkward-stage" with a smile on your face and make it a "fun" experience!
thanx...

for those nice compliments!
I am now also trying out multiple hair ties (a big one at the BASE
of the tail and one or two SMALLer ones farther down, toward the end.
Gives it a braided look. I will post more about this in a new post.

Well, I think the comments were rather well deserved. Afterall, this site wouldn't be as successful without your many many postings which are great! (Funny, but I too have been using lately 2 Hair Ties. Really kinda neat...........and as always fun to experiment with different "styles" of Long Hair.

I'm just past one year from short.. Everything now pulls back, but I found mouse and hair spray works great to hold it all down if you don't mind helmet head.......
