The end?
Posted by Polska on August 09, 2003 at 00:50:28: Previous Next
Well, it's been two years or so since my last major haircut and I'm starting to think it might be the end of a journey. My hair is well past my chin when pulled down in front and touches my shoulders in the back. It's failry wavy, some might describe it as a somewhat relaxed curl, and quite thick. These two factors make it very hard to maintain and bothersome, especially at work and in the sun.
I'm thinking of taking some final pics and cutting it within the month. I'm also, however, debating whether to get it whisped or thinned, or dare i say, even try an undercut. Although, if i got an undrcut,i wouldn't be able to cut it to a medium length like i'm thinking of trying, so as to make the change a little less durastic.
I think I'll wait a month before describing, but the more I go out, the more I ant to cut it.

Have you considered a ponytail?
You HAVE to follow your FEELings...

Yes, maybe you should try a ponytail before making any MAJOR decisions.
When I finally had the option to make a tail...
it made a world of difference...suddenly I had control over my hair...
AND I had a CHOICE as to HOW I wanted to L(.)(.)K on any particular day
when facing the World...
So try that tail and see if it makes a difference for YOU.
The, if you still are of a mind to cut, then do it.
If you are not a Longhair in your Soul...
believe me, you just can't fake it!
Good Luck!

Before you cut anything though, utilize the "two week" rule
that is described on this board.
Many wise people on this board developed that rule for
obvious reasons.

The ponytail suggestion everyone else has been giving you is a great idea for bringing under control the thick hair that you, and I also have. I know what your going through because my hair is very simular to yours from the pictures that I have seen, only you are quite a bit further along than I am.
Now my worry is that you are going to end up making a big mistake giving up so soon and wish you hadn't done it. I believe your hair will be more controllable when it all gets around nipple/lower-shoulder blade length, that is if you still have any passion left for having long hair at all. Sometimes the longer stages of our hair looking bad makes us lose sight of the full picture when undertaking such a journey. Believe me, I have made cutting mistakes on more than one occasion over the last 15 years because of this fact. My hair right now has more bad days than good, but I believe when it gets to where I want it to be in the future (1 year and a half to 2 years maybe) it will be more pleasing to me, so for now, I endure for the future.
I only say these things to you because I have been there. I say give it more of a chance, try the good advice these fine people on this board are giving you, but ultimately it's in your field to decide how you truly feel about long hair in general. Hope this has helped, there is probably more I could go on and on about, but for now I can't think of anything else to offer. Peace to you, bro!

For some reason I don't really like the ponytail or how it looks on me. I'd really like for my hair to be thinner. It would be easier to manage and I think would overall look better. This is why i find myself considering such options such as the undercut. How did you find that yourself and what about it persuaded you to start over?

The under-cut I got last year was for the same reason. My hair being really thick like it is was bothering me the same as it is bothering you and I thought this would be a fix for it. I liked the results at first, but gradually it started looking too ragged all the way around. It made the back flip out uncontrollably because the thickness coming from the top had nothing to blend in with anymore. It looked more like an oddly shaped hat of hair more than natural hair falling down. So, after letting the back grow back out to about a half inch, I had everything above cut to blend in with the back, leaving the top and bangs a bit longer than everything else.
I had at that point become dissappointed with myself that I hadn't just left it alone to begin with and went through a stage of time where I was done with trying to grow my hair long. But, after a while of just leaving it alone I gradually brought myself to jump back on the long hair wagon again and vowed to myself that no matter how bad it looks through the awkward stage of thick hair, I was going to accomplish my goal no matter what.
That's what I figure will happen to you and I am trying to save you the trouble and extra wait that will accompany giving in.
All that hair you see around the bottom that is doing funky waves and flips will be the hair that rests at the bottom when it reaches mid-back. Everything above that will be pulled straight from the weight. What I am saying here is that you are not giving your thick hair enough time to get the bottom weight it need to pull your hair straighter. There is a guy on this board who calls himself TampaLonghair who has hair that is a somewhat example of this. His picture is below this message. Notice the waveyness at the bottom of his hair and also how straight the length has pulled it down above that waveyness.
Hope this helps. Peace!
complaining about thick hair

I don't ever want to see anyone complain about thick hair again. I WISH I had that problem!!! When your hair gets long it will be nice and full, as opposed to mine. It may be a pain during the awkward stage, but will pay off in the end.
Go ahead and cut it if you want, but you would have had some very nice hair if you'd let it grow.

Attn: Sherri
I'm probably just being paranoid here, but it's not me that wants to cut my hair. The reason I say this is because you posted your post under my post to Polska (sorry for that tongue-twister). I thought maybe you were thinking that it was me (Treyn) who wants to cut. If that wasn't your thoughts, I appologize. Peace!

Treyn:
I know you're not complaining about your hair or contemplating cutting it, but I have seen you refer to it as thick and/or curly on multiple occasions, and wanted to adress that.
I have to say that in all of your pictures, your hair looks to be about medium thickness, if not on the thinner side, and pretty darned straight. I consider my hair to be fairly thick and wavy, bordering on curly. I'm sure there are many out there who have it much worse than I, but just to give you some perspective, here's what MY hair looks like after a three hour rehearsal and two hours of gym time...
Peace!

I agree. Thick hair is something to be proud of - especially on a man. I just don't get why it would be something to complain about.
