Guys, I need some help!

I've been growing my hair for over a year and a half now, and it's down to my shoulders.
The problem is I can't seem to keep it neat. My bangs are as long as the rest of my hair and they curl upwards, and I can't keep them straight.
When I tie my hair back it doesn't look neat either, I see guys with ponytails that are straight and neat, but my hair goes in every direction, and won't stay together when tied back.
I have VERY thick hair, and I'm not sure how to describe it, I guess you'd call it wavy, though it's not that wavy. Would the thickness of my hair make it this hard to control?
I also am not sure if I'm tieing a ponytail correctly, so could some one tell me how it's done?
I'm sorry but I don't have a scanner so I can't send a picture, but I hope you guys can help anyway.
Thanx

From my experience with friends, etc., thick hair will always require more effort...you can't just slap it in a 'tail and call it a day. There have been many here who have raved about L'Oreal Vive Smooth Intense Shampoo and Conditioner (there's a serum too, which is optional but I highly recommend). It's made for dry, frizzy, or unruly hair, which describes mine to a T. You may try that and see what happens. Also, while it's wet, try applying some gel (I am a new disciple to L'Oreal Melting Gel) and combing through. Then leave it alone.
Anything I forgot, guys?

Nope! It looks like you got it! I have the same type of hair called full body waves with a tight curl at the tips. If I do not put serum in my hair I look like a bad cousin it!

Keep growing, the longer it gets the more your curling "problem" will go down. Products are only a quick fix and may not do anything for your curling ends. It's just the personality of your own hair.

Same here. Mine just fans out below the hair tie, getting wider and wider as it falls down my back. Since hair thins out at its longest length, if my hair is spreading out there, this means you can see my shirt through the bottom half of my "tail". At some point I realized some types of hair just aren't meant to be ponytailed.
My hair grows in spirals, and in a way they are like dreads. A certain amount of hair accumulates in a spiral, and then it rejects further companionship. So I get lots of independent-minded spirals. Hair like that looks great hanging off your head, but it abhors being all bunched together in an inch-wide space. Below a pony tie it rebels! The resulting fan-out just looks unnatural.

This sounds familiar. Since I started growing my hair again (this is my second time and I'm about to hit year 3) I used the knowledge I gained from the first time around. This time I never wore a ponytail, I never combed my hair while it's dry and I didn't shy away from using certain hairproducts. Use a moisturiser and mousse to keep it under control. Mousse, if used correctly, can really make a difference.
