Growing my hair out

Hey, I'm new to this board obviously, but I was just wondering if you guys could answer a question of mine.
I used to hair long hair, hair that reached my chin more or less. It was straight at the time. But then, in a streak of what I now think of as stupidity, I cut my hair short. Really short.
Now it's about 2 to 2 1/2 inches, and I'm trying to grow it out again. I know the average is about 6 inches per year, but my hair does grow pretty fast. Faster than average. And it's really thick too. But my biggest problem is that now it's curly. So all of this leaves me with 2 questions.
1. What are some tried and true methods for making hair grow even faster than normal?
2. What are some (relatively) sure fire methods of straightening out hair.

There are no magic bullets to make your hair grow fast. Good nutrition and common sense will make it grow as good as it can and as it gets longer (and really long) the curls may become less of an issue.
There are ways to straighten hair but if you are going for long-term growth this is not recommended because they more often than not tend to damage hair and the 2 1/2" hair that is on the top of your head now needs to survive for years to come if you are going to have long hair.

Thanks for the advice.
So I wont bother straightening it out then, not unless it becomes a serious issue or until my hair has reached it's desired length.
And as for the question of making it grow faster, it's a shame. I can't wait to have long hair again.

There are none. Anyonw who claims otherwise is a liar or has an IQ equal to his/her shoe size. You can, however, make sure that your hair grows at it's optimal rate by taking care of yourself properly (don't do drugs, eat an apple every day, don't stay up late to watch the Playboy channel, etc.)

Personally I'd let it grow out till it weighs itself down. My hairtype also matches your description and I know that the awkward phase with this type of hair truly sucks. But be patient. Once your out of the awkward phase you'll be thankful you didn't straighten it out.
