Braids and Waviness

About a month ago, I started having my mom braid my hair back (in a French braid, I guess?) every day before school. I noticed that if it were wet when she braided it, by the time I took it down (some 7 hours later), it would be REALLY soft and REALLY wavy. Is there a safe way of getting these waves without braiding? Say, like, a salon or something? Is it safe for the hair? How much does it cost? How long do the waves stay in?
Thanks.

I have seen pictures of your hair, Michael, and it is my professional opinion that attempting a salon perm to put waves in your hair may result in REALLY wavy but not REALLY soft. In a word, a disaster. I am posting to discourage you from having it done.

The waves remain forever BUT you must remember that hair grows from the scalp, not the end--so eventually the ends will be wavy but the new growth will not. Therefore, if you were a client of mine, I would encourage you to stick with the tried and true method: Mom's french braiding while your hair is wet..

Thanks! Why exactly would it result in a disaster? Is it the straightness of the hair, or the thickness, or what?
I am effectively discouraged, but glad to know that I won't make that mistake, thank you!

The only way to permanently put waves in your hair is to use harsh chemicals on it. This process has to be done to new hair growth every few months as well and will ruin your hair. A better idea would be to leave that braid in for a longer period, maybe 24 hours. My hair keeps those waves for at least 2 days after being braided for 24 hours. Absalom

I know this was posted a while ago and is now at the bottom of the page, but maybe you'll still see it. If you want to take the time and want the wavies, but without the harsh chemicals, braid it the night before shcool, after you get your hair wet, leave it in overnight, and take it out in the morning. You will have those waves for that day.
