surfing and long hair maintenance

I have had long hair for about 3 years, I keep it tied back in a ponytail. It has brought me much joy until recently when the front strands all started breaking. Now I have annoying mid-length stray strands in my eyes all the time that I can't tie back and look, i think, pretty stupid. I surf fairly regularly too and after leaving the water my hair breaks really easily. What do I do?! I am considering going short, something I never thought I'd contemplate. Is there any chance my hair will recover to its former glory?

Perhaps just a little, (and I do mean little amount) of gel would keep these stray hairs in place? Just a thought. Good luck. ps: Are you getting enough vitamin D? Another "just a thought."

I'll be visiting my brother in S.Diego next week. Lived there 15 years and can't wait to hit North County again and hang out at all the old haunts and surf spots. I'm a long boarder and used to do headstands at Cardiff Reef!!! This trip I'll have the long locks flowing once again and remember the feeling of that long salty hair hanging in my face and on my shoulders while waiting for sets to roll in. I don't imagine I'll be there long enough to do any damage to my hair (maybe my body) but enjoyed reading this post.

Could possibly be the salt-water damaging your hair and it doesn't help as your hair gets older. Have you tried spraying some leave-in conditioner in your hair before heading out to the waves? I would think that it would help protect your hair.

Yes, put conditioner in it before you go out in the water. also it would be good if u could use a spf in your hair to keep the sun from more damage. if u are unable to put conditioner in it first, at least rinse it with clean water before you go in the salt water. when your hair gets wet, the cuticles open up and suck in waterever it gets, if it is clean water or conditioner, this will be in between the cuticles, so the salt water will not get absorbed in as much. and always rinse it with fresh water after u get out of the salt water.
You will need to get regular trims more to keep it shaped up, after a while, your hair should look better.
Deep conditioning treatments are also good to use once a week.
Use gel to tame flyaways in the meantime :)
HTH!
There's always

Those pesky swimming caps. Others here have used them and said they protected long hair very well!
