And how does this work exactly, like what are the benefits and drawbacks?
Cheers!

...I've actually had long hair with both before...first I had layered long hair (yes, this was around the 80's), then I tried for all one length. The following is my story, and opinion:
When I first was growing my hair out, I found it very distressing because of the awkward stage. My hair is fairly think & has a wave to it. I complained about it to my stylist and so she layered it in an effort to thin it out, which was supposed to allow my hair to fall better & be more manageable. So, instead of having all my hairs the same length (one length), there were several levels, or "layers", she cut. I continuously had to use about a 1/2 a can of hair spray before leaving the house to hold it in place to have it look like it did coming out of the shower. It NEVER got any better for me. I eventually cut my hair.
Then, I regrew with it all as one length. The awkward stage (about 2" to 12" for me) was difficult to get through while I was growing it out. But, once I got to the 12" or so mark, the difference between one length and layered hair was like day and night! It's the LENGTH of the hair that weighted my hair down to make it more manageable. So, as long as I had layers in my hair, those hairs were never getting weighted down. Moreover, one length hair is easier to put in a pony tail, half tail, braid, etc.
For me, hair that's all one length is the only way I'll go now. Hope that helped.

Well said, Fitmus... Layers do NOT work. As evidenced by the nightmare that I'm dealing with now.

I guess if you grow your hair from any shorter style where it does not all FALL to one length, then what you will get is a "layered effect."
You can't really cut your hair to fall to one length until its reaches past your ears, then you tend to look like the old He-Man Cartoon with what I think they call a Bob.
So if your growing your hair out you will probably have a layered style of some description until you reach about 9 inches.
I think most women have some layers in longer styles these days and personally it looks really good, its a bit more interesting than just having one length. But most guys don't go for it.
A lot of women with long hair have it cut slightly shorter at the bangs, (chin length) this also makes the longer styles more interesting.
In a nutshell the benefits of layers appear to be a more interesting long style.
An example of a layered style is Mark Ellot, he posts here regularly see the link below:
