Saunas and Hair

Hail! I cannot quite figure this out for myself, so I need other's opinions to help formulate my own. I work out at a gym quite a lot, and naturally I have long hair. At the gym there is a sauna and I was wondering if that's good or bad for one's hair? Would it not be good as the heat would open up the hair follicles and bring more blood to the roots, hence making it grow stronger? Or would it dry out the hair? Anyone?
Here's my take on the situation...

I personally couldn't see how a sauna would do your hair any harm. We shampoo and condition with warm to hot water. I could only imagine that the effect of sauna's causing the body to sweat out impurities could only do the same for the hair folicles and roots. It would probably be an added help in obtaining optimum growth by opening up the blood flow to the scalp as you stated yourself. Sounds perfectly logical to me, bro. I say go for it. Peace!

A good friend of mine has a sauna in his house. He has longer hair than me (damn him), and he uses it quite often. His hair looks wonderfull. So I doubt it causes any harm at all. If you want to be carefull soak your hair in cold water before you get in.

How hot is the sauna is the first question I would ask. 135 degrees F I know for a fact does not harm my hair which is the heat of my hair dryer on the low heat setting. I have hair over 3 feet long and it would take too long to dry without a hair dryer. Here is my guesstimate as to the heat tolerence of hair. People with long black hair who live in hot desert climates would probably see a hair temperature of at least 150 degrees F on a 120 degree day in direct sunlight with no wind. From the photos I have seen their hair usually looks healthy and shiny. Perhaps a hot oil treatment while in the sauna might help but I am not sure of this and would suggest getting additional advice before trying it. I would guess also that blond hair is less heat tolerent than black hair but am not absolutely sure on this one either. One thing I am sure of is that using a wide tooth comb will stimulate blood flow if the teeth make gentle contact with your scalp. Hopefully you find some of this helpful and be sure to wait for some additional posts on this from other members who may have better advice than I can give.

I belonged to a health club for 10 years that had sauna and steam room, and I used them often. I did not find any damage to my hair from the sauna. To be fair, I used steam more often than sauna, but, I always went into sauna wet, and with my hair completely soaked. At least that way you are not added all that heat to completely dry hair.
