Of course. I've stated before that for the first year of growth I treated my hair horribly. I tried gels, blowdriers, forced combing, straightening irons, etc. You name it, I did it to try to make it hang and appear longer.
It was at about the one year mark that it hit me that my hair in its natural state looked pretty sweet. This was about the time that it began parting nicely on its own and the top (which is less curly than the bottom/sides) began to hang down over the rest. It should be pointed out, though, that the top of my hair was about 2 inches to begin with, so only the bottom is truely 16 months.
I don't know how far you are in your journey, but embellish the afro's forshadowing. You've got thick hair and that will be wonderful for the long run. But be warned, defeating the afro dosen't go hand in hand with having manageble hair. My hair no longer is an afro, yet it isn't exactly manageble. Tangles, frizz, 'natural dred tendency', etc.
Best of luck with your growth!
