Sudden change of hair type

I'm twenty-nine years old and my hair has always been straight-as-straight. I had my hair cut 6 weeks ago and my stylist commented that my hair had gone 'wavey' at the back. She was quite surprised, as she's been cutting my hair for over four years and knows how straight it has always been. She has just cut my hair cut again, and was shocked to see that it's going curly! I have had some length cut off (approx 3 inch), which would take some weight off it, but I've had all styles (long and short) since being little and never-ever has there been the slightest kink in my hair. WHAT'S GOING ON??? Please advise... Thankyou.

This often is due more to hormonal changes than anything. It occurs more commonly in women. I have personally seen this in women after they delivered a baby. Curly to straight, straight to curly and even color changes. I haven't seen any medical studies on it, just anecdotes.

Thanks for the response, Todd. Hmmm. I haven't delivered a baby, I'm not pregnant, and I'm not aware of any reason why my hormones should suddenly change at 29 years old! The hormone theory makes sense though... Are you a hairdresser, or are you commenting just on personal experience? Have you seen it happen when pregnancy/childbirth isn't behind it? Thanks...

I'm a physician.
Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason. I don't suppose anyone will ever spend much money researching it because there's no money in the answer (to recoop the research costs).

I do know that your hair will change over time. Changes such as texture and color are common changes that everyone's hair goes through from the day your born throughout your life. For example, My hair when I was a child was poker straight and light blond. I even had my hair past my ears at that age. I didn't keep a journal or anything to get into detail, but today my hair is a little darker, it feels differently and it certainly is not poker straight anymore.
What attributes to this? Growing, aging, diet, environment, health conditions or past ones, genetic programming, etc.. Can be a number of things or combination of. Even our appearances in facial, skin, size, tone changes slowly over time, why not your hair?

The same exact thing happened to me. I'm 18 years old, but when I was 14 my hair went from straight and shiney to wavey and super dry. It's probably because of all the gel and crap I used in my hair in the past.

Nope, not that either, I've never had to use many styling products on my hair. I had one perm about 15 years(!) ago ago, and have never had it coloured. I think the only answer is the hormone thing. Where that will take me, I don't know!

My hair was board straight until I hit puberty, then it got extremely curly. Maybe hormones, maybe not. I don't have a clue, I just know that I like my hair a lot better curly!
Perhaps you've got some good hair karma to be blessed so spontaneously with curly hair! WELCOME!
