Split ends and hair growth.

Hi!

Back on this old chestnut of whether your hair gets longer quicker (notice I don't say 'grows quicker')if you trim split ends off. My partner says it does.

Yes! I know that hair grows from the roots, and that hair is essentially dead. But she says splits travel up hairs as the ends break off. If your hair grows for a year before it gets split ends, then it's probably grown about 6 inches. If you then trim off an inch to get nice new, un-split ends, those might go for, say, a year before splitting again. So it's a question of 6 steps (or inches) forward, one back, six forward etc. Five inches a year instead of six.

cheers, Barry
