ive been growing my hair for about 7-8 months now. I used to have much longre hair than my friends and now they almost caught up to me. I thought maybe my hair isnt healthy, so i asked my mom. She said that to keep it healthy u have to trim it up every 5 weeks. I think thats just defeating the purpose of what i am trying to achieve. Any answers?

DON'T DO IT!!!!
Read through this board and you will see that the single best thing you can do for your growing hair is to STEP AWAAAAAAAY FROM THE SCISSORS!!!!
THIS INCLUDES 'LITTLE TRIMS'!!
Just say no...

I concur with scaredresser that trimming your hair just defeats the purpose of growing it long. Leave it alone and just let it grow. Absalom

i've been growing mine for 25 months now, and I get a trim about every 6 months. I have straight hair and after a while the ends do look really bad, sorry but I have to say yes to trim, but every 5 weeks seems a little extreme. and when I do get it trimmed, it is very very little!!

There is a difference of trimming it during the first 1-2 years, and neaten it up once it's archived a "longish" length.
I would recommend against trimming the first 1,5 years at least. And then start trimming it every 4-6 months when it's belove the shoulders to keep it neat.

I agree. I never touched mine until it was about 20 months. I am now at 28 months and have trimmed twice. My objective now is just to get all the layers to go away so that everything is the same length. I suspect by June 2004, I will have all my hair at the same length and can allow it to grow with no more trims.

I say, give him the facts and let him make his own choices based on good, accurate information that we give him. Everyone has different goals and hair.
Here is some info to help you come to your own decisions based on your goals and needs.
Hair grows on the average, about 1/4" a month (4 weeks).
Depending on your goal and level of patience, you decide how often you want/need trims if you decide to trim or not, while you grow your hair out.
Figuring 5 weeks, your hair only grew out around a 1/4" or so, and most trims take about 1/4" off, depending on your stylist. If a 1/4" is being taken off every 5 weeks, then what you grew was snipped off, thus you achieved no length. Where you are in your stage of growth will help you make your decsion. How soon do you wish to achieve your length goal should be used in your decision as well. How your hair looks used as well...Are you happy?
The fact is, the further apart your trim schedules are, the more growth you will achieve per year.

If you just want to have long hair, then by all means, stay away from getting you hair trimmed. However, if you want to have healthy looking long hair without breakage and split ends, then get your hair trimmed every now and then. It will keep your hair looking healthy and the appearance will definitly be neater.
To ensure healthy growth of the hair, you need to get blood flowing to the scalp. One way to do this is to brush your scalp and hair gently with a natural boar bristle brush. Or you could just get out there and exercise, as exercising gets the blood flowing throughout your entire body. I run anywhere from a half to 2 miles everyday, which is not just for my hair, but for my general health. Now, you don't need to get that involved in exercising; walking, light jogging, or bike riding should be sufficent exercise. Multi-vitamins are also very good for your hair, and your entire body, so you should be taking those as well.
You should also look at your diet if you feel that your hair is not healthy. As the old saying goes, "you are what you eat", and your hair will show this. If you eat like crap and don't exercise, then your hair may end up looking lifeless and dull, with poor growth to boot. Another key element in the process of gaining a great head of hair is drinking large amounts of water. Water is so important to healthy looking hair (your body included), and it is a shame that so many people overlook it.
Start drinking a lot of water, get out there and exercise daily, take your multi-vitamins, and eat foods that are good for you. You may have heard people talk about this little rountine a million times before, but there is a reason for that. It's because IT WORKS. I can guarantee that within a couple months you will start to see a difference in the quality of your hair, and your body as well.
i 100% agree

Trimming is hotly debated on all long hair boards.
It is undeniable that trimming makes your hair shorter, but also makes it tidier.
The secret is to look after your hair well enough to reduce the trims you need to an absolute minimum. There are many websites which can help you to reduce the damage you do to your hair just by living. Overbrushing and combing, using ties that are too tight, brushing your hair when still wet etc are all bad for the hair.
Unless your hair gets untidy exceptionally easily, I would not recommend requent trims, especially when you are just starting out and want to make plenty of progress.
I would say grow for six months and then see if you really think you need a trim. Then grow for another six months. Long hair seldom looks as tidy as short hair, but a degree of waywardness is part of its charm, and once you can wear it in a ponytail, that in itself will make it look tidier.
Final word on trims. Have a look at the special interview at The Long Hair site, where there is a girl with hair almost to her ankles. She trims it (by a foot) back to her knees once every eighteen months.
