1 year, 5 months, no haircut

Hey everyone,
Well, 1 year and 5 months, and I started out with a buzz cut basically. My bangs are about an inch beneath my chinh when I pull them down (curly hair). Problems and questions for anone who has answers:
I have wavy hair that fluffs out whenever I wash it, especially on windy days, and when I brush it out when it's dry I look like carrot top. Any suggestions for beter managability?
The back of my hair is extremely curly (much more so than the rest of it, which is just wavy). If I don't brush the back out, these insane shirley-temple-esque locks form. But, when I brush it out, it's fluffy and bush like. I don't use blow dryers because I don't want to damage my hair and risk making it even FLUFFIER. Am I correct in not doing so?
Any comments on straightening (at a salon) or "thinning" (I think it's called layering sometimes)? I'm not big on salons and have never had my hair "done", but if it would aid in managability, I might think about it.
Thanks alot, you're all very helpful
God bless,
Jonny ><>

Long curly hair needs very different treatment than either short hair or long straight hair. First of all, curly hair should NEVER be brushed when its dry. That is what makes it frizzy. Also, that will damage your hair, making it easily breakable and knotty.
Here's what does work.
After you have washed and CONDITIONED your hair, pat dry (but do not rub) with a towel. Spray in some leave in conditioner (Infusium 23 works well for me). Then starting at the ends, and working your way up, gently brush your hair to get out any tangles. Its important to use a flat paddle brush with widely spaced teeth. Once you have brushed it all through, work in some NON ALCOHOLIC gel. Alcohol will end up drying out your hair and make frizzies. Brush the gel all through your hair and style as desired. Then leave it alone as it dries. I think that you will find that your hair looks and behaves a lot better. And you will be able to achieve this without any cutting.
Two things to experiment with. One is how much gel you will need to put in. Just a little goes a long way. It will just make your hair look natural and non frizzy without looking stiff.
The other is how often you wash your hair. You may find that it actually behaves itself better on the second or even third day after washing. The natural oils will help to control the frizzies and make your hair look healthier. You will find that as your hair gets longer, it can absorb more oil and will need to be washed less frequently.

i agree with the advice below...brushing your hair is a definite no no. i have wavy hair and have found that in the past the advice below has worked well.
however, now, i regularly use a flat iron...love it. you gotta be careful with it though because it can damage your hair if used improperly...but when used the right way, the results are sooooo worth it.

From a woman with curly tresses: First of all; thank you Reflective! You have given me some wonderful tips. My hair has extremely subtle layers; I have found that helps give it movement and bounce. After I wash my hair, I let it dry naturally (unless there is a special occasion and I want va-va va voom) and let my fingers run through it and help define the curls as it dries. Happy curls!

Most important: I forgot to mention. As Refective stated it is best not brush out your hair after it has dried. You will lose the curl, it might wave and your hair will do it's own thing. Unlike straight hair, curly hair does not cooperate and go back to it's original curl. Strange but true.
