Undercuts -- a partial warning

I have been having a rough time of the old awkward stage over the last week, even with my hair coated in gel (to hold it in place) the back and sides were so unruley. my hair is now just below 5 inches long after growing since mid july. The vitamin tablets seem to helping the growth along a real treat, but the back has started curling and waving everywhere and while the top was getting nice even the gel couldnt control the back.
SO...
After pondering it for a while I pulled all my hair up around the sides and proceded to undercut the back and sides to a number 5. well the sides are cool, as my hair on top is long enough to reach and cover my ears nicely so am happy that this hair now sits much more tidely.
However...
Misjudging how far my hair went down at the back i did the same undercut and hence while it too hangs down much nicer, there is now a short patch below where the longer hair ends... which looks a bit daft!!!!
But hey, i cant see it without two mirrors and I dont care what other people may say about me, so hopefully this will help for a while and then I will grow the back and sides out too...
I thought the way in which StanleyBey's hair looked when it was at the stage mine is in was cool and I know he had had the back and sides cut so i took that as a goal... I dont think I have achieved this so well, but it'll do...
I may post me first pics soon, who knows!

Do you mean the undercut I got as shown in my January 2002 link?

Yeah, except my hair isn't that long... I also liked the look you had in the photos labelled "June 18, 2003"... however, my attempt wasnt so succesful!! Plus your hair is straighter than mine, though I find mine is sitting better now.. its just the "stripe" of shorter hair at the bottom of the back that i think means I messed up!
Oh well it'll grow out!

Boy..........don't we all know that one! How far (inches or fraction of inches did you undercut?) Most likely you should have had this done in a Salon rather than try to do it yourself. Oh well.....it WILL grow back.
I am presently involved as an accompanist to an Elementary School for their Dec. Concert. One month ago, a boy (about 10) had the nicest long hair to mid back. It hung straight........but I could detect just a bit (hint) of an "Undercut." Still, compared to most others it looked very well. I was really astonished!!! I was also amazed at the number of kids with longer hair now compared to one year ago. (Looks like it is on its way back.) 3"-4" the average length on about 1/3rd of them. But of this young man.........at todays rehearsal it couldn't be missed that a severe "Undercut" had taken place. To me it looked awful. (Bald sides and back now.) But of course to ea. his own. As long as he is happy within himself. (The most important of all.) His fathers hair is to his waist with no undercut..........the only parent in the school with long hair. His wife even braids it and she has beautiful long hair herself. He he..........most of you guys out there would "melt" if you could see it. I suspect part Native American Indian Blood.............and THAT is hair to die for!
Perhaps the "slighest Undercut" as I witnessed 1st on this 10 year old would make you happy? Any questions, feel free to contact me. All the best-

Have just decided i am stoked with my undercut... it is not a harsh one (its a no. 5) and it makes my hair sit so much nicer on the back and sides, it means my hair looks longer as it isnt sticking up so much and it brushes a lot easier too... Have decided to make this a regular thing until my hair (from the top of my head) reaches the base of my hair line on the back of my neck... then i will grow out the back and sides as the top hair should have a bit of weight by then.
Personally I would highly recommend this to those with thick slightly wavy hair who are having a bad time of the awkward phase... I have had nothing but complements and I feel a lot more comfortable knowing the hair on the back of my head is so much tidier.
Cheers to StanleyBey for the inspirational photos!
