Hair Slowdown?
Posted by FITMUS on December 16, 2003 at 16:35:38: Previous Next
Hello all. My hair is now about 1 inch below my ears. I know a lack of patience can make it seem like one's hair is hardly growing, but it truly feels as though my hair isn't growing as fast now that my hair is below my ears. This might be a strange question, but for those of you that have hair below your ears, did it/does it seem like your hair growth slowed down?

well to me is does 'seem' like that, but only because i really dont have anything to compare it to anymore. I mean the first year I would see how long it was every week, and see the growth practiaclly every 1/8 inch. Now it's about 12 inches, and it just grows over time. However when I compare it to pictures 8 months ago the growth amazes me :)

Unless you're horribly malnurished or starting to go bald, I don't think your hair growth is really slowing down. Speaking from a scientific standpoint, the rate should be pretty constant until you approach your terminal length, which is almost certainly several years away for you.
Subjectively, though, it did seem to be dragging on very sloooooooowly around that time for me, too. It's just because you're starting to lose your patience with it. You're getting into the most akward part of the growing-out process. Hold on for few months and it'll start to get better. I was at your stage less than a year ago, and know I don't even feel the need to measure it anymore.
One piece of advice: If the look suits you, bandanas are your best friend.

Hi BB,
I was just curious: when you wear the bandana, is it possible to put your hair behind your ears while you wear it? Will the hair stay in place? If you wear one, would you be able to post a couple of pics on different ways you could wear one? I'd be really interested, as I'm sure others here would, the different ways we could use a bandana. If you don't have any pics, and if you don't mind, maybe you could explain the different ways to wear one. I've never worn one before...

I asked nWo Slapnut how he tied his bandanas a few weeks ago, his response is here Bandana Post
The link he refers to is the way I tie it when I wear one, it works great!

Yes, that can be frustrating. There is no chain that sells them called "Bandannas R Us". They are actually sold by a variety of different stores, but there doesn't seem to be a sense of reason to why a particular store sells them. You'd think they'd have them in the young men's department at department stores, but I've never seen them there. You'd also think the small shops along Haight Street would have them, but in one quite exhaustive shopping spree down the street I didn't see any at all.
Yet, I do see them, often in unexpected places. Some of those places are:
Large drugstores, but they only had red and blue ones.
Western wear stores, a few colors and patterns.
Motorcycle shops, mostly those with the logo of the company on them, but they may have a few others.
Tourist trap shops, but they'd only have two or three patterns.
Clothing stores in gay neighborhoods and specialty shops inside gay bars, excellent selection as far as colors go (google "hanky code" if you wonder why).
One hippie clothing store had them in several routine colors and also one awesome one in an American Indian motif.
And sometimes I've seen them in booths at street fairs and renaissance fairs, but they've always wanted outlandish prices for them.
Thin cotton ones work best. Some sellers make them thicker or out of other material to make them more durable and thus hope to justify a higher price. The problem with that is the plain cotton ones that are of thin cloth fold best multiple times, and cotton ones don't slip around on your head. So go for the cheap $2 ones made out of thin cotton cloth. They will work best on your head.
Also, pay attention to the pattern that is in the middle area of a bandanna, if you care about how it will show on your head. The perimeter of a bandanna won't end up on your forehead.
While on the subject, I might as well share my bandannas page, which I made one day while very giggly: :-)

Thanks for the info. I'll have to do some searching, it sounds like. Too bad Target or Walmart doesn't sell bandanas. Sure would make the trip much easier! I'll see what I can do, though. I'm really interested in trying one out!

They might. I've seen similar stores have them, but they'd usually just have a few colors if they did. I seldom shop in such stores because I live in a city and those outfits only locate where real estate is cheap. So I don't have a lot of experience with them.
What I'd do is ask one of the employees rather than scouring the shelves. Employees often don't see bandannas as being part of a bigger category of anything, so they are likely to put them almost anywhere.
Great Writing :-)

Bill, your bandanna writing has such a fun tone. Now I want to show your page to my class as an example of writing to inform. Of course, the actual motive is always to sneak in long haired men in a positive way into school work whenever possible. :-)
Elizabeth, who was playing pirate today in a white bandanna with orange polka dots
Oh, larger bandannas, or scarves by then I guess, also make nifty superhero capes.

Cool that you and Sherri liked it! :-)
I have a longhair friend who's a teacher's aide. He saw it a couple of years ago, and he said, "My kids will love this! They love anything that mentions snot!" ;-)
Later he told me the teachers would not let him show it to the kids because the school considered bandannas to be gangwear. All I can say is, "Politics run amok." (sigh)
Excellent!

Most dollar stores have them, as do most head shops.

Not a strange question at all.
As mentioned before, it just appears that way. Much easier to
notice hair that creeps down your face but once it drops below
your chin you sort of loose your point of reference.
I just ignore the growth, never measuring, no photo record. Then
one day I find when I sit in a chair, my hair is pressed between
the chair and my back.
Patience... :-)

I think there are certain "milestones" along the way and most likely you are waiting for the hair to reach Chin Length..........and it seems like it will never get there? Well, it will. Patience is taxed enough to drive one up a wall because we all want Long Hair RIGHT AWAY! Alas...........we ALL have to put in our time........but in the end the rewards outweigh everything! Just hang in there and try (if possible) to forget about it. One year from today all of this will be over and you will have gained 6" average. Perhaps take a ruler, measure, and look in a mirror at how long it will be then. 6" inches is truly an amazing amount. Good Luck.
Thanks...
