Growing longhair and sideburns ...

im talking not about true sideburns, im talking about the hair that grows down right by your ear. What should I do with it, obviously cutting it off would look awful but trim it, thin it? Or if I let it grow eventually it will be apart of my hair once it gets long enough right ?

Those hairs usually don't reach the same length as the rest of the hair. Mine got from about 4cm to about 1dm, not enough to reach the tale or look good when the other hair isn't covering it. I used to trim it like the hairdressers do when cutting the hair on the entire head short (about 1-1,5 cm left). But about a week ago I cut it of completely, thought it would look rediculous, but looks quite good actually...

Mine have reached about 10 inches and can go into a ponytail with the rest of my hair.

I've found, for me anyway, what looks best is to trim the hair in front of my ears so it appears to be the same length as the rest of my beard. I let the dividing line be determined by whether the hair strands can be swept over my ears or not. This not the same place as, and is higher up than, the dividing line between the fine hair on my scalp and the coarse hair on my face, which is about half-way down my ear.
Note the words in the previous paragraph "appears to be the same length". I actually have to cut those strands a bit longer than the ones in my beard because they are finer and they lay down a bit more compactly. So I have three lengths to deal with: above the ear (terminal length), top half of the ear (slightly longer than beard length), and everything below the middle of the ear (beard length, which is about 2 cm).
Try different things and see...

Like the guys say, these hairs often have much shorter terminal length than the rest so growing it hoping to reach a tail isn't always an option. But try, its different for everyone...
If you think they are unsightly, I'd say grow short sideburns, they'll provide the facial definition to detract from the strays whilst you grow them out or they'll give you something to blend them into if you trim. (Bit like Bill Suggests with his beard.)
