hairline at the front

On most long haired men I've seen on TV, their hair seems to go up at the front, giving them a clear, neat hairline and making the bangs fall less on the face (i posted a picture showing this further down)
In the new Lord of the rings movie, I noticed that nearly ALL the male characters had this characteristic at the front. Some of these may be wigs, but even if they were wigs, they wouldn't make wigs look unnatural would they? Especially on Aragorn, it looks very natural.
But for me, my hair goes straight down at the front (the whorl of my crown i think was very loose when I had shorter hair, so the left to right thing is only defined really close to the crown). Even when I gel my hair back, right near the roots at the front, the hair goes downwards before bending upwards.
My question is, is this an uncommon characteristic? From what I've observed, most people's hair grows naturally up and off their face at the front (near the roots), I've asked a female friend about this and she said this only happens if the hair has been gelled or put in a ponytail for a very long time, but now I'm not so sure.
Thanks again

Your friend is right. Most peoples hair does NOT naturally grow back and away from the face at the hairline. It is years of pulling the hair back, in ponytails usually, that causes the hairs to realign in a backward direction. Wear yours pulled back for a while and you will achieve the same look. Be careful though not to wear it painfully tight, as this can cause hair loss.

Hair length equates to hair weight--that is, the longer the heavier. Longer hair combed straight back gives the illusion that it grows up at the front when, in fact, it is the weight of the hair pulling it up and back from the front and holding it there.

While most people do have hair that grows "up and back" from the front hairline, yours is not an uncommon characteristic (occurs more often on persons with very thick, coarse hair). Coping/changing generally requires added length or use of styling aids.
