Hi there I'm trying to get some help.I'm trying to let my hair long I only want it down to the base of my neck or hitting the shoulder blades.I have naturally curly hair, right now it's starting to get kinda big on top and especially in the back.I do take care of my hair I wash it three times a week with a good shampoo Isoplus shampoo conditioner, and then I use Clariol herbal essence conditioner.I also use a hot oil treatment with olive oil and other natural oils.Everyday I use a moistrizuer that's cream like it's made from jojoba oil and I also take a Centrum daily multivitamin.I've been growing my hair now for two months and it looks like it's growing great!! My question how many inches is needed to get your hair to the base of your neck? And what about your shoulder blades? My dream has always been to have long hair ever since 1990 but I would usually give up because well it looks like hell until it grows out and I would get embarrased! My hair is curly so it gets real puffy.Any suggestions? I want long hair so bad!! Please help me--Thanks!!

Hi Juan. I have a plastic 12 inch ruler, like kids use in school. Sometimes, to check my hair length, I hold some hair at the base of my neck and pull it straight out gently. Then I put the ruler up against where that hair is attached to my scalp. I then lay the hair on top that end of the ruler and gently slide my hands down the hair till nearly the last of it falls loose. I clamp my fingers around that part of the ruler where the hair fell loose, then see where my fingers are. Right now I'm about 5" in length all over. Okay, so the next thing I do is put the end of the ruler back along the place where I just measured my hair, but hold it flat against the back of my neck. Looking in a mirrow, even though the ruler is behind my neck, I use my other hand to sort of drop down below my hair to the length I want it (end of neck, right on shoulders, etc.). I slide my hand over to the back of the ruler and clamp on. Like before, I now can see how much more length I'm going to need to get what I want. I subtract from that number the number of inches I just measured for the back of my hair. The difference is what I need.
Your hair is curly and the length is going to pull some of that out, but I suspect that you'll need to add another inch or two to whatever you find you still have to grow out to make it the length you want.
I hope all this makes sense. I've never tried to describe to anyone how I measure my hair. I do this about every two weeks, sides, back, top, front, just to get a feel for where it is in length.
Josh
