How do I grow long straight hair?
i am a 20 year old, and last month i shaved my head ( i used to have a regular men's haircut style). because the hair was so damage, it seemed to curl, and there were always hairs standing out when i combed it down. After I take a shower when i comb it, and it isnt bad, after it gets dry during the day, it just curls. I dont have curly hair, but when my hair grows to a certain point, it curls in the ends. When I was little, i didnt have that, but I started wearing lots of gel when i was a teenager, so it may have damaged it.
I figure, by shaving it, I can start over with new hair.
As of right now, my hair has grown (similar to Keanu reeves in the movie SPEED) I probably want to shave it 2 more times in the upcoming 3 months, before i let it grow out during april or may.
Enough about the brief description of my current situation, this is what I intend to do:
My main goal is to grow out my hair so that it covers my ears completely (just like in "that 70s show") or the band called the beatles.
then gradually i want my hair to look like this:

how do i do that? it looks like its easy to do, but i once tried growing my hair in high school, and it was sort of hard to do, because different areas of my hair had different size strands.
so as of right now my hair has all even the same size strands.
how do i go to getting a johnny depp style hair?
i just need advice besides saying just grow it out...
i appreciate your advice.

Hey, you are now in the position that i was in at the beginning of August 2003 with the current length of you hair. My hair does exactly the same as yours at the ends when I let mine grow, it curls. My girlfriend said mine looked like a perm gone wong at the back which it did. From my personal experience you need to grow the top sections of your hair out first and get the back and sides trimmed every so often. Then when the top section is nearly down to the top of the ears start growing the sides. This will enable you to grow your hair at quite a uniform length. Doing this will mean you will go through the bowl on the head hair cut. Hopefully the weight of the length of the hair will keep it kind of straight. The other alternative is to just let it all grow. I did that for nearly 6 months and last night I went to get the back trimmed and the sides neatened up. They took far too much off but i think it will only take a few months to get it reasonable again. Once the top is down to the sides I would just let it grow. Thats what I'm doing now. Look at www.geocities.com/sk8ar51388/lhp for picks of a guy growing his hair. Its got pics every month so it might give an idea of when to get it trimmed etc. I got some pics of the state of my hair before I got it cut and now if you would like to see.
the trims will only make it harder....

IMO it's a bad idea. If it's uniform length all the way around it won't look right, unless its very long (atleast past the shoulders).

I'd agree with Paul for the most part, but you can avoid the "bowl on head" look by not having the back and sides trimmed too short, (ie: not shaved with clippers.) Do this and after a year your hair will look something like mine or better still like Aaron's. But you can grow out with different styles too. The messy grunge look is pretty cool, you dont really need to trim for that.
As for stopping the curl at the ends, this is often solved by trimming the ends so you have a blunter finish. Again works for me!

You don't..............that is "unless" your hair naturally grows straight to begin with. If so,than you do! The little "flips" on the ends are normal and WILL straighten-out somewhat and sink lower as your hair grows out. Trim the "flips?" Then NEW FLIPS will appear at the ends just trimmed shortly afterwards. (A never ending battle for sure.) Of course for perfectly straight hair that isn't straight to begin with, one can resort to straighteners, Irons etc. But in the end this will result in damage to your hair and a ton of Split Ends. ps: You can shave your head all you want "in preperation" of a "fresh-start" of growing-out Long Hair...............but alas, this will do no good unless your hair BY ITSELF grows straight. Good Luck and happy growin! Please remember, we are all too often our own worst enemies when it comes to how we want to look. Everyone is different.
