i'm not sure, but i read something in the net:
"If you are actively growing your hair, trim it a half inch every three or four months. If your hair begins to show damage, it is important to trim it more often! Damaged hair doesn't grow, it breaks, and damage will only increase with time.
"
i guess that way it cuts out the damaged ends of the hair. so that it will grow more.

All damaged hair grows. Hair grows from the folicle not from the damaged end. All hair out of the folicle is DEAD!

Like Bill points out the ends of a hair isn't the part of the hair that does the growing.. so trimming it wont increase growth. But you hair will look a lot better if you do.
don't worry, that is complete bs (n/t)

Not true. Trims don't define how thick or thin your hair grows. Your genes do that. Trims only help you control how "cleaned up" your hair looks.
It is true in one aspect....

will your overall hair be thicker? No.
Will the ends of the hair appear thicker and healthier? A definite YES!

Trims will just make your hair shorter. It depends on how often you trim and how long the hair is you trim. If you begin to grow, trims will do nothing but keeping your hair short. If you have shoulder length, maybe every 3-4 months. A trim is also good to keep a certain length and to let your hair looking good. In general, the more trims you do, the shorter your hair gets.
My opinion is also that the talk about splitted ends is just making panic. Hair like shoulder length very rarely gets splitted ends exept your hair tends to get splitted ends very fast. A few splitted ends are not dangerous and do nothing to your hair, I have them as well as long as I have long hair but just a few you don't notice unless you look at them very closely. Splitted ends is just an arguement to get your hair cut, nothing else.
