Scroll down the board and you'll find loads of opinions on this matter, but mine is simple:
Your hair will neater if you get regular maintanence trims (every 10-12 weeks) you just have to be pretty explicit that the stylist only takes then ends off, and/or trims up the back n sides.
Most guys want to grow their hair to one length, so it serves little point to let the back and sides grow long whilst the top is still struggling to reach your ears, bsides it'll probably be more unruly and harder to manage if you do.
Best to trim in the early stage as it'll look better, be easier to manage etc. Besides assuming you want to grow it one length, rather than have it layered you'd only have to have a more drastic cut to even it out further down the line if you didn't trim early on.
Just my humble opinion

So when trimming, just ask the haircutter to trim the ends off in the sideburns and back? dont use a razor to razor trim the the hair to get close to the scalp, just trim using sciccors?

nah... no trims... i got two trims at the very beginning, like 4 months in and one at 8 months but none for the past year...
they will straighten themselves out... of course it depends from person to person and from hair type to heir type... My hair won't look neat whatever i do, so I just make it seem like i have tried...
