A trim question

Tonight my Dad was like "man, you need a haircut" I told him i was growing my hair out. He then said "well you need to get it 'shaped up' so it has some 'style' "
I told him I didn't think that was a good idea.
What should I do?

I would say that if your father didn't put up a fight about you saying "it is a bad idea", then leave it at that.
There are a wide array of opinions on this board about getting trims. My opinion is to let your hair grow in the shorter awkward stage with out trimming. Just make sure to take good care of your hair as to stress it as little as possible. Trimming at a shorter stage only keeps your hair in the awkward stage longer. This can be very frustrating and can lead to backing out on growing it long all together. Now when your hair gets long and out of the awkward stage, if you feel you need to trim to shape it up, even it out or whatever, then the loss of length will seem less evident, thus not near as devastating if at all. Hope I haven't confused you and Peace!
(p.s.: You can learn a lot about hair care just from reading this board, which is full of very intelligent people.)

Use some type of gel and see if you can create a style that looks neater and more refined, or go for the wild look and put a good amount of gel in it and blow-dry it up side down so it spikes up. This creates an interesting look if your hair is from 1 to 3 inches, but your dad might think it is a little much. Usually I do not recommend the blow dryer but in your case this will help. When it gets long enough stop blow-drying!

I'd say you should do what you want to do first and foremost...
...But Personally I do what your Dad suggests off my own back. And I've not lost any significant length in the process. Thats because if you get your hair "shaped up" you tell the hairdresser not to touch the length on top.
But hey the choice is yours
