I recently went to a trendy hair salon in my area. No, not for a trim, but just to look through the men's hairstyles in the books they had there. Although there are some short haired styles, it seems there are quite a few longer styles showing up now, nothing major long, but it's a start. I guess since it takes anywhere from several months to a year or two or more to grow the adequate length it'll be a while yet before we see it on more guys.
I asked the hairstylist there what's more popular now on guys, short or long? She said longer is definatly getting more popular. In fact, she said that it's about 50/50 right now, for long vs short. Since then, I've been looking around, and noticed lots of guys with longer hair (ie lower neck or a bit beyond) plus many, many guys going through the awkward stage (myself included). A lot of the guys seem to be in their early to late teens, but there are also lots more in their 20s 30s, etc.

Trends don't translate to long hair growth very well.

Depends on your definition of long... but your right, they usually pass far too quickly...
