New info on hair growth rates?

I recently went to a trendy hair salon to look through pics of men's hair styles in the picture books. First off, longer hair is clearly gaining in popularity, based on the number of pics of guys with longer hair in their books, plus based on what the hair stylist told me. I'm talking about hair to lower neck, shoulder length, etc. Not REALLY long, but much longer than what the last popular trend was.
Anyways, I asked the lady there how long she thought it would take for me to have my hair long enough for a style like one of those in the books (lower neck, shoulder length, etc). She told me at least a year or more. That was rather discouraging, I had estimated it to be a bit sooner.
****Now, here's the MOST IMPORTANT part... she told me that hair grows about 1/4 of an inch a month. Most of the info I've read on this website and elsewhere suggests that hair grows 1/2 inch to one inch per month, with a 1/2 inch being the norm. What do you think?
On a side note, doing some quick checking, it looks like finger nails grow about half as slow as hair, at least for me it seems to be the case. So I can kind of use this as a measuring guage. Anyone else notice this correlation?
Solid believer in 1/2 inch average...

With my own experiences growing my hair, I have always gotten at least a 1/2 a month. Then I started taking daily vitamins regularly and have documented 3/4 inch a month. The sources and proofs of the 1/2 inch average far out weigh the opinion of one salonist. I understand that she being in such a field would greatly give her an idea of an average rate of growth, but I would still have to stick to the 1/2 inch rate based on the number of sources and the testimonies of others as well as my own. Peace!

I too agree with the half inch/month avg. Yet I have seen alot of testimonials from people who have taken biotin as a supplements and have experienced faster growing rates. 5mg per day seemed to be the optimum amount for noticable hair growth however this is many thousands times the RDA but biotin is water soluble so is excreted in the urine so it doesnt pose a problem. I myself have bought the supplement but I keep forgeting to take it!!! so cant comment on the result but my shampoo does contain it, but my hair grows v fast anyway tho never measured it......Q - how on earth do you accurately measure the growth of your hair?! since I dont think any two of my hairs are the same length and it grows quicker in different parts!

Hello Ste,
One way to measure change over time is to use a tape measure from the middle of the front hairline over the top of the head, down the back and down to the ends. The resulting number will not be an accurate length for your individual hairs but it will give you a number to compare against in each successive measurement.

I believe that 1/2 inch is good average for hair growth per month. It varies from person to person. For example, my hair grows quicker than 1/2 inch per month. To achieve your maximum growth, make sure that you get all your vitamins. (Also I read somewhere that seasons can play a factor on how quickly your hair grows.)
Hope this helps.

Do you recall which season was the best and which was the worst?
Thanks!
PS: I never really paid attention to my hair growth rate until just recently, but I would have to say that mine grows slowly, less than a 1/2 inch per month. Back when I was about 17 I starting to grow my hair out, didn't have a cut for easily 6 or 8 months, and it wasn't nearly as long as some of you guy's hair after the same amount of time.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that spring and summer were best, because hair growth was related to UV exposure (minus sunburns on the head) or something like that.
Right and wrong

Right and wrong. Hair does grow faster in the summer. But it's because of a higher ambient temperature aroung the head, and thus higher blood flow. Going into an air conditioned environment eliminates this effect. BTW ultraviolet exposure damages hair.

A.) Most probably correct.
: she told me that hair grows about 1/4 of an inch a month. What do you think?
B.) Think she ought to go back to School again and study as she apparently didn't learn that 1/2" per month is the normal length for most everyone.

Yeah, I thought she was a bit off the mark too. Most info I've heard puts average hair growth at 1/2 inch per month. Maybe she said that so I wouldn't over-expect hair growth any faster.
In any case, I've been growing it out for about six months, and it seems to be a bit slow growing. I'd say two to two & half inches of growth, should be about 3 inches. I've recently started taking hair growth vitamins, hope that helps. Plus I eat right and excerise, which should also help.

I think like anything we are all different and unique i our physical makeup. My hair grows at about the 1/2 inch a month rate or just a little bit more for some reason in the summer months.( my bangs seems like they grow at a faster rate for some reason) and my nails grow fast as well. The girl that does my nails says she has bever seen nails that grow stronger or at a faster rate than mine. So I tend to agree with the 1/2 inch a month.

From the evidence on this board...
Most people I've noticed are doing better than 1/2 inch a month, this seems to be more a minimum threshold than an average. No-one has complained of growing less than 1/2 an inch
