question about trimming

If I am growing my hair long... should I grow it out at the same time and then trim it later... Or should I trim the back until the top of my hair reaches the back then grow it all out...

Grow it all out. Then when it gets to your desired length trim it to the shape you want.
You COULD do it your way but you'll look like a mushroom. =-/

Just let it grow and grow and grow from where it is now. And, only "walk past" Barber Shoppes. Good Luck.

You can do it eitherway... you'll probably find the awkward stage easier if you trim the back n sides whilst you grow out as atleast you are maintaining some shape and style to your hair whilst you grow it out.
You don't need to look like a mushroom either... to avoid that just dont get the back n sides buzzed, always makesure they are an inch or so long.
If you wait and cut at the end, then you are going to feel like you have lost a LOT of hair when you get that trim to even it out. As there is usually a 6 inch differnce between your neckline and longest hairs on top of your head. This will remain whilst you grow it out. So your trim to even it out would be pretty drastic. Personally to loose that kind of length in one cut would destroy me.

I've been growing my hair for 36 months now (3 years lenght, or 18 inches)...without a single cut in it. The hair is uneven, a bit frizzy (especially the ends), and I've discovered my hair was naturally a bit wavy when it passed neck length (ie not flat). All that put besides I've never cut/trimmed my hair at any point.
Though now I was thinking about trimming a little of the ends, the split ends if you will. That is to limit the frizziness. I use a conditioner that works against it and I still get frizz (Dove weightless moisturizer for colored hair).
Also on a long-term part, when my hair reaches waist or a bit below (6 years growth, 36 inches, or 3 foots, whichever you like) I'll grow back my natural color over the colored one, so it's strong again. The color is 6 months old and I didn't redo it so its 3 inch of natural versus 15 inches of black-blue colored hair. When it reaches 72 months of growth I'll trim it as it grows to keep that lenght.
