when your hair texture is twisted

Read a lot of stuff about people with hair that is not straight. I suppose I will get a lot of flak about saying it, but to me, there is straight hair, and then there is the rest of us! Just like some people are Kinsey 0s, and the rest of us are meant to be "out there" (wherever that is). Anyhow, I have done a bit of research, and it seems that there is a small group of hair dressers and hair stylists who are on the net and actually LIKE non-conformist hair textures like ours. There is the naturallycurly2.com site, which is aimed at women, but has a pretty low-fi style that can appeal to lh guys too, which has lots of tips and links. Most sites seem to encourage people (female or otherwise) to grow their curly hair, but have it trimmed every three or four months. The important thing, is for the cuts to take place when your hair is clean and DRY, so instead of getting a wet cut for the straight-haired soul you are never going to be, the stylist trims the hair you actually HAVE. If you are a guy in a hurry but are wanting a trim, this has the benefit of not giving you any nasty shocks once your hair is dry, so I think is for the good. The emphasis on PATIENCE and NATURE is shared with this site, but there IS a split: Lorraine Massey encourages curly-heads NEVER to straighten their hair, and treats the desire as an "addiction", whereas most of the others celebrate curls and kinks while acknowledging the desire to walk on the non-wild side once in a while. As someone with wimpy wavy hair that is desperate to get out of the closet, I find this all very heartening!

Actually People who have naturally very straight hair are extremely rare, most people have a natural wave to their hair. But we are again bombarded with the "Straight is Beautiful" message thanks to the media and fashion industry.
We tend to forget that almost everytime we see a celeb on TV, in a film or in magazine that they have undergone hours of make-up and hairstyling. Things that just aren't practical for most of us who have to earn our living doing something other than looking great!
I have a friend who straightens her very curly hair every two weeks after she washes it. (Two weeks between washes... eweww...) It takes her 3 1/2 hours to wash, dry and straighten her hair. Then she spends the next fortnight desperately avoiding water otherwise she has to repeat the process.
The only thing that makes this processs manageable for her is that its a bi-weekly event! Imagine doing this 3 times a week!
Everyone with wavey or curly hair wishes it was straight, but its not the natural run of things... so why change it?

And it's funny, I actually know a lot of straight haired gals that wish they had curly hair! Plus they love curly hair on guys.
And as far as fashions go, they are starting to change. Wearing your hair more natural and such is starting to become the In thing, as evidenced by Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, and many other celebs starting to let their hair go naturally wavy or curly now. I know those are girls but thats ok, the fashion is changing for males too!

If you look at the percentage of women who have their hair permed (curled), you will be shocked.
And then the care to replenish that dried hair with moisture....
Millions of dollars are spent by women every year (or should I say billions?) by women to have their hair curled.
Not nearly that amount of women are paying to have their hair relaxed (straightened).
